Harrogate, Tennessee, April 16, 2019—Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) tops Alarm.org and the National Council for Home Safety and Security’s 2019 Safest Colleges in America list.
The organization looked at a number of factors in publishing their ranking of the top 100 safest colleges in America including data and crime statistics reported to the FBI, crime in surrounding areas and security measures instituted by schools.
The report credited LMU for a broad range of measures to ensure campus safety including patrols, lock checks, after hours escort services, camera monitoring and dispatching for both emergency and non-emergency situations.
This is LMU’s first recognition for its safe campus. In November the LMU Police, Security and Dispatch department was named to the Safe Campus Top 25, moving up to No. 15, by Safe Campus, a national organization dedicate to improving safety of U.S. colleges and universities. The University has been recognized for a wide range of efforts aimed at improving the safety and well-being of students and employees on its Harrogate, Tennessee, main campus and nine extended learning sites, which stretch from Corbin, Kentucky, to Tampa, Florida.
The University remains committed to continual assessment of safety risks through the Critical Incident Response Team, the Threat Assessment Team and the LMU Police, Security and Dispatch department continuing efforts to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies. Last semester, LMU started the roll-out of a powerful new tool with the implementation of the world’s leading mobile safety communications solution, LiveSafe. LiveSafe may be accessed by the LMU community as a free downloadable app on phones, tablets and computers. LMU will use LiveSafe to quickly broadcast messages via text, email and push notifications to the University community. LiveSafe’s geo-targeting capabilities give LMU the ability to broadcast specific messages to groups based on location. The solution also gives the LMU community the ability to send text, photos, videos and precise location information to report a range of safety concerns. LiveSafe’s cloud-based command dashboard receives tips in real time and allows campus police to respond via secure live chat.
The department also updated its memorandum of understanding with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department and continues to employ POST certified officers supported by extensively trained dispatch staff. LMU maintains an emergency siren to alert the community of public safety or weather-related emergencies, promotes a University-wide “See Something, Say Something” campaign and conducts a number of training and educational programs for the university community throughout the year.
Additionally, Dean of Campus Safety Operations Cesar Gracia has been named a finalist for The Campus Safety Director of the Year. He is being recognized for his dedication to creating the campus police, security and dispatch department, leading the department as they passed the Tennessee POST and Highway Safety Audits and for developing the “See Something, Say Something” campaign on campus. The winners and runners up will be announced at the Campus Safety Conference which will be held in Las Vegas, June 17-19.
