HARROGATE, Tennessee, March 15, 2019 — The J. Frank White Academy (JFWA) Knights basketball team ended the season in the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) Division V national tournament championship game in Dayton, Tennessee, March 3.
The Knights defeated Faith Christian of Virginia (66-63), New Bern Christian of North Carolina (63-52) and Franklin Classical of Tennessee (54-53) to advance in the tournament after losing to Providence High School of Maryland (32-22). JFWA then fell in the championship game to Lakeway Christian of Morristown, Tennessee (44-82).
Jake Gross and Jacob Yeary were named to the NACA Division V All-Tournament Team.
The Knights finished the season with a 22-6 record. The performance is the most wins in a season since 2001, according to Coach Cory Cheek, who has led the team for five years.
"I am extremely proud of our guys and their accomplishments this season,” said Cheek. “They did things the right way by working hard in the weight room and in practice, by playing together and being unselfish, and by sacrificing personal ambitions for overall team success.”
As a team the Knights averaged 61 points, 30 rebounds, 13 assists and eight steals each game this season. Starters included juniors Gross (Harrogate, Tennessee) with 16.4 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, 2.1 steals per game and 6 assists per game, and Yeary (Tazewell, Tennessee) 13.6 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, 1.6 steals per game, 2.4 assists per game; sophomores Patrick Moore (LaFollette, Tennessee) with 3.7 points per game, 1.1 rebounds per game, 0.8 steals per game, 0.4 assists per game, and Tanner Brush (Middlesboro, Kentucky) 9.4 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, 0.7 steals per game, 2.1 assists per game; and freshman Blake Stoner (Middlesboro, Kentucky) 4.1 points per game ,3 rebounds per game, 0.7 steals per game, 0.5 assists per game.
The roster also included juniors Alan Luc (Middlesboro, Kentucky) and Justin Poland (Harrogate, Tennessee) and sophomore Daniel Gao (Tazewell, Tennessee).
Since 1980, NACA has provided excellent national tournaments to have an opportunity to share the Gospel with student athletes and to encourage them in their walk with God. They host 3,000 participants annually in nine sports.
