Harrogate, Tennessee, April 5, 2019—Advanced Spanish language students from The J. Frank White Academy (JFWA) will host The Mountain Fiesta, Saturday, April 20, in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.
In its third year, The Mountain Fiesta celebrates Latin American culture in the heart of Cumberland Gap and offers an opportunity to experience and appreciate the similarities and differences between the mountains and culture of Appalachia and the mountains of Latin America. The event is planned by JFWA students under the direction of Spanish Instructor Zachary Greene.
The daylong street fair and party will take place in downtown Cumberland Gap around the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Convention Center (601 Colwyn St.) with musical performances, dance classes, family games, art exhibits, cultural displays and more. Music performances will take place throughout the day from Rio Bamba, Appalatin, CornMaiz, Lee Warren and Outlaw Ritual. The performers range from Brazilian, high energy Latin and American jazz to bluegrass, Appalachian folk and rock. Food vendors representing Bolivia, Honduras, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Appalachia, and more will be on hand.
New this year is the Mountain Fiesta Groovy Llama 5k set for Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. Registration will open at 4 p.m. The race fee is $15 ($12 with LMU ID) and includes race shirts with early registration and while supplies last at race day registration. Live music will follow the race.
“The reason the Mountain Fiesta is so successful and important is that both cultures deeply value food, music, dance and coming together in community,” Greene said. “The Mountain Fiesta brings all those things together. The result is a beautiful harmony of cornbread and tortillas, bluegrass and bachata, pupusas and fried pies. The celebratory interplay of these two seemingly polarized cultures in the setting of a festival has been marvelous to witness and more successful than we ever imagined.”
Greene’s student organizers include seniors Madison Acuff (Harrogate, Tennessee), Max Slowinski (Harrogate, Tennessee), Will DeBusk (Tazewell, Tennessee), Elizabeth Beason (New Tazewell, Tennessee) and Rose Mountain (New Tazewell, Tennessee); juniors John Bradley (Harrogate, Tennessee), Alan Luc (Middlesboro, Kentucky), Grace Kelly (Rose Hill, Virginia), Caleb Daniels (Harrogate, Tennessee) and Kyla Piercy (New Tazewell, Tennessee); sophomores Tanner Brush (Middlesboro, Kentucky) and Olivia Nichols (Tazewell, Tennessee) and Academy graduates Bailey Brewer and Kaylor Neely.
