Harrogate, Tennessee, March 15, 2019— The J. Frank White Academy (JFWA) Lady Knights basketball team went undefeated during the regular season with a historic 25-0 record.
The undefeated regular season was the follow-up to winning the 2018 National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) Division VI Tournament in Dayton, Tennessee, and bringing home a national championship banner.
The Lady Knights moved up to the more competitive Division II at the 2019 NACA Tournament in February. They lost to Central Virginia High School (Virginia), State Line Rush High School (Virginia) and New Hope Blue High School (Maryland) and ended with a win to Rock High School (Florida) in their final game. Beraya Piercy was named to the NACA Division II All-Tournament Team.
“I'm just excited that we have an opportunity to even be better next year and I look forward to the new challenges ahead,” said Coach Dan Piercy. “But most of all this team will always have a piece of JFWA history attached to it.”
This season’s roster consisted of sophomores Kinsee Lefevers (Tazewell, Tennessee), Presley Cole (Tazewell, Tennessee), Abigail Garner (LaFollette, Tennessee) and Haylea Helton (Tazewell, Tennessee); and juniors Anna Posey (Tazewell, Tennessee), Kyla Piercy (New Tazewell, Tennessee) and Beraya Piercy (New Tazewell, Tennessee).
“Each one of our lady Knights helped provide a spark at some time during the varsity season,” said Piercy. “Lefevers hit two threes during the championship game of the Christmas tournament that helped us overcome a seven-point deficit. She also did this with a severely twisted ankle. Posey grabbed a critical rebound and was able to score it to win the game against Lynn Camp. And Garner hit a game-tying bucket with less than two seconds on the clock that allowed the Lady Knights to extend the game into double overtime and eventually beat Lee County, Virginia.”
The Lady Knights’ bench also made major contributions this season.
“I knew I could always depend on Helton to come in and grab a handful of rebounds any time that she got an opportunity to play. I'm thankful she always stayed ready to play,” Piercy said. “And Cole was a huge contributor to our team this year she could spark our offense if things weren't going well which made our team even more dangerous.”
Junior varsity players for the Lady Knights included freshmen Alexis Vanover (Cumberland Gap, Tennessee) and Mary Johnson (Harrogate, Tennessee) and eighth-grader Naomi Garner (LaFollette, Tennessee).
“I appreciate them for putting in time and effort for our JV team,” Piercy said. “I was proud of them. I know they will be ready to work hard next year.”
Piercy has been coaching the Lady Knights five years. He is assisted by Sandra Piercy and Shea Coker.
Since 1980, NACA has provided excellent national tournaments to have an opportunity to share the gospel with student athletes and to encourage them in their walk with God. They host 3,000 participants annually in nine sports.
