Harrogate, Tennessee, August 6, 2019 — The J. Frank White Academy (JFWA), located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), welcomed the inaugural classes of kindergarten through third graders to the newly renovated JFWA Lower School, located in Kresge Hall.
“This is a new experience for us,” said JFWA Principal Bobby Lockhart. “We started with high school and added middle school in increments, and now we get to see students begin their educational journey and we can be a part of that all the way throughout. Everyone is excited and we have had a lot of smiling faces.”
The Academy is a college preparatory school accredited by AdvancEd. It offers small class sizes and access to LMU facilities and resources including the Carnegie-Vincent Library, Tex Turner Arena, advanced science labs, dining hall and athletic fields.
“It’s a unique opportunity on this university campus where a student could start in kindergarten and go through the medical school or another professional school,” Lockhart said. “The Academy already has graduates who started in fifth grade who are in medical school now, so it’s just a matter of time before one of these kindergarteners ends up there.”
Since its founding in 1989, the Academy has boasted a 100 percent college placement rate. Academy students achieve higher than average scores on state and national standardized tests such as the ACT.
“The Academy gives parents in our area a different choice,” Lockhart said. “They can focus in, even at kindergarten age, on this being the career path and the educational path they want to pursue.”
Historic Farr-Chinnock Hall, located on the University Quadrangle, houses JFWA grades 4-12. To make room for the lower grades, LMU completed renovations to nearby Kresge Hall earlier this summer. Another historic building on campus, Kresge Hall was built to house the University infirmary in 1950. It has also served as a residence hall and has housed the office of undergraduate admissions and University Advancement at times in its history. While the building renovation is complete, LMU plans to further enhance the grounds around the building to include an outdoor play area.
Tuition at JFWA includes lunches and up to 30 credit hours of college coursework for junior and senior level students who meet requirements. Tuition rates are tiered by grade level and monthly payment plans are available. Along with the excellent curriculum, JFWA offers a full range of athletic programs, extracurricular organizations and educational travel experiences, including numerous field trips and educational opportunities outside the classroom.
