Canvas

JFWA uses the learning management system Canvas to complement course delivery. Each course at JFWA features a standardized course template. This allows the teacher to provide resources, including syllabi and grades, as well as interaction opportunities with students.

What is the Canvas learning management system and how will my child use it?

Canvas is the web-based learning management system used at J. Frank White Academy (JFWA). Canvas provides a mechanism to share course resources, receive student assignments, record grades, communicate with learners, and much more.

What is an Observer account?

As a registered proxy (parent or guardian), you can use "Observer" access in Canvas, which lets you see your child's courses and schoolwork. This role gives you a view-only pass to their digital classroom. You’ll be able to follow along with what's happening, but you won't participate in class discussions or assignments. Like students, Observers can’t view a course until it’s published and has started. You’ll only be able to see the class once it's officially started by the teacher.

You can use the Canvas website or the Canvas Parent app to check on assignments, due dates, and grades. While you can't turn in work for your child, you can easily track their progress and see their interactions in the course. Every teacher sets up their class differently, so what's available to see may vary from one course to another.

For in-depth details from Canvas, review the Canvas Observer Guide beginning with the “Canvas Overview” and How do I navigate a Canvas course as an observer?

What browsers can I use to access Canvas as a parent?

Chrome is the preferred browser for Canvas. Do not use Internet Explorer and Edge. Use Chrome rather than Safari, even on a Mac. Although many browsers are supported, Google Chrome is the recommended browser, with Mozilla Firefox as a backup. As with any online learning management system, if you experience difficulty with any of the supported browsers, it is recommended that you try using an alternate browser to see if this resolves the problem.

Do I need a separate Canvas Observer account for each of my children?

No. Once your parent observer account has been created, all students will be connected based on records from the student information system. Click on the name of your student to see a drop-down that contains multiple students, if applicable.

Can I access my child’s courses and assignments in Canvas?

As an observer, you are able to view your student's courses and you can view all the course assignments.

⭐ Important: Make sure to click on Courses > All Courses on the Global Navigation Menu (left-hand side) to access everything, including past and current courses and preview future enrollments (unavailable until released by the teacher).

Can I get notifications about my child’s progress or missing assignments?

You may set notifications and reminders and alerts based on your preferences. This can be done under “Notifications” via email or through the app.

Can I view grades and teacher feedback in Canvas?

Yes, as an Observer in Canvas, you can view your child's grades, assignment submissions, and teacher feedback. You can also see course events and announcements

Are these my child’s official grades?

As an observer, you have full access to view grades in Canvas. The official grade of record for J. Frank White Academy courses can be obtained upon request by contacting the JFWA Guidance Counselor via email.

Can I contact my child’s teacher through Canvas?

Yes. You may use the Canvas Inbox to send a message.

Is there a mobile app for parents?

The Canvas Parent app is a mobile tool for parents and guardians to view class info like the calendar, assignments, and announcements. For a full experience most like your child’s, it is recommended to use the Canvas website. The app works on iOS and Android devices.

Download the app based on your device. Select “Find School” and start typing JFWA. Choose the option” J. Frank White Academy - JFWA Parent/Guardian” and proceed with logging in with the non-LMU email address and password you established in previous instructions.
