Summer 2022 Workshops!

We offer a variety of workshops every summer in 3 main arts categories; performing arts, visual arts, and creative writing.  

 

Performing Arts


The rush of a live performance, there is nothing like it. From seeing a live theater show to listening to the amazing musical talents of musicians; AITG performance art has a wide array of events that will keep you entertained. Join us for a show, or learn how to be a better performer, the world of performance is waiting for you.

 

Appalachian History Workshop information

Appalachian History Club

Ages: 6 to 10
Cost: $50
Dates: July 11, 12, 13, and 14
Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Information: Join Natalie Sweet, the program coordinator from the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum for this exciting opportunity to play within history. This camp will teach elementary-age children about the experiences of the region's people in the 19th century. In this 4-day camp we will be exploring the themes of Gardening, food, clothing, tools, and entertainment. Your child won’t want to miss this opportunity to explore Appalachian traditions firsthand.

Storytelling Workshop Infomation

 Personal Narrative Storytelling Workshop

Ages: 18 and up

Cost: $30

Dates: June 24 and 25

Times:

Friday: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Information: We’ve all heard that the human mind is hardwired for stories. It’s certainly true. All stories have an effect on us, but personal narratives create a unique bond between teller and listener; it creates an impact that’s lasting. Perhaps you want to seal a business deal, let your kids know about Grandma, persuade a jury, get a laugh around the Thanksgiving Day dinner, or maybe even propose marriage. Our workshop will help you polish and perfect your story. Don’t have a story yet? Sure you do! We’ll help you find it and delight with you in your journey to share it. Let’s create a memory together. Come explore the traditional Appalachian art of storytelling with storyteller Tennessee Rick Elliot in this fun and engaging 2-day workshop.

Our visual art workshops bring together talented artists from all walks of life; we have a mix of talent from traditional artists to fine art artists. With a wide variety of art available there are so many opportunities to learn a new skill and or grow as a visual artist.

Information: Join us for a weekend of classic photography from the famous local photographer Joe Clark also known as the Hillbilly Snap Shooter. The weekend will include photo displays of Joe Clark’s photography conversation with Junebug Clark, Joe’s son, on the photographs and the stories behind them.

Information: Experience the photographs of famed photographer Joe Clark in this historic exhibit. This photo exhibition will include the photographs from the famous local photographer Joe Clark also known as the Hillbilly Snap Shooter. Clark’s work has been featured in Life Magazine, Look Magazine, Jack Daniels Distillery, and many more. Through his work in the 1950s Clark captured the beauty and life of those living in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee and the surrounding area. Come see these beautiful images for yourself and take in the history of this beautiful region.

Clay Pots for Kids Workshop Description

 Clay Pots for Kids Workshop

Ages: 9 to 14

Cost: $50

Dates: June 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17

Times: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Information: Has your child ever used clay as an art medium before? This workshop is the perfect place for them to learn all about the basics of using clay and how to create clay pots. Join Belle Blake an Artist and current LMU student as she teaches participants how to use clay and a clay wheel. In this 5-day workshop participants will learn how to use clay, how to use a clay wheel, and even make a few clay pots of their own. Come learn the basics about the art of working with clay!

*Participants pieces will be fired and glazed after the workshop so they will need to be picked up a week after the workshop*

 Art Storytelling Workshop

Times: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

Information: Has the world been a bit too stressful lately? Come participate in this workshop with Savannah Campbell, assistant professor of psychology at Lincoln Memorial University. This 2-day workshop involves learning about various expressive art therapies that can offer benefits to assisting with mental health.  This workshop will include several demonstrations of these art pathways.  We will be covering basic therapeutic skills that can help with coping in life in general. Clay Basics for Kids Workshop Information

 Clay Basics for Kids

Dates: June 20, 21, and 22, 2022

Times: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Information: Looking for your child to explore with their creativity? Look no further than this workshop. Join Belle Blake an Artist and current LMU student as she teaches participants about how to mold and shape clay.  In this 3-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to build clay bowls and even create little clay monsters or animals that they will paint and take home. So, join us for this fun and explorative workshop!

Acrylic Painting Workshop Information

 Acrylic Painting Workshop

Ages: 18 and up

Dates: June 27, 28, 29, 30, and July 1, 2022

Times; 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Information: Get ready to learn everything you need to know to be a better acrylic painter! Join Emily Taylor, local artist, and adjunct professor at Lincoln memorial university for this 5-day workshop. In this workshop participants will learn the basics of painting by beginning with several quick, small studies exploring the action and interaction of color, the feel of the paint (it’s range of thin to thick), mixing color, using brushes, and other points of technique. These initial sketches will use a simple still life format. We will then move to larger canvasses with more developed compositions and a range of possible subject matter.  All levels of experience are welcome.

Information: Have you ever wanted to created animations of your very own but didn’t know where to start? Look no further than this exciting workshop! Join Casey Cosgriff, who holds a BFA and MFA in painting and printmaking, as you learn the basics of animation in this 2-day workshop. Animation and Storyboarding involves both paper and pencil (flipbook) animation and introductory digital animation using mostly free apps and software.  The class will combine techniques from drawing and animation to creating a small animation series portfolio.

Drawing Workshop

Ages: 18 and up

Dates: June 27, 28, 29, 30, and July 1, 2022

Times: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Information: Do you want to get better at drawing? Join Emily Taylor, local artist, and adjunct professor at Lincoln memorial university for this 5-day workshop. In this workshop participants will learn the basics of drawing from observation and imagination, using a variety of drawing materials and subjects.  To start, we will break down the act of drawing into some of its elements and then approach drawing through each different art element in turn: line, shape, value, and texture.  We will then begin to use the elements together to complete some fully composed drawings.  There will be a lot of quick studies and exercises in seeing and perception so students will keep an active sketchbook throughout the week. We will also look at many examples of drawings from the long history of this practice, from pre-historic times to the present. All levels of experience are welcome.

Information for Monotype Printing Workshop 

Monotype Print Making Workshop

Ages: 15 to 17

Cost: $30

Dates: June 27 and 28, 2022

Times: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Information: Looking for a new way to express yourself this summer? Join Casey Cosgriff, who holds a BFA and MFA in painting and printmaking. In this 2-day workshop, participants will learn about the art of monotypes. Monotypes are single unique impressions, the image is often started by rolling ink onto a plate with a brayer, and then using a subtractive drawing and painting process to create a reversed image when printed.  Participants of this workshop will get to learn more about monotype, create their own monotypes, and learn how to keep creating this art after the workshop is over.

Creative Writing


We all have a story to tell, why not tell yours with one of our creative writing workshops. Learn valuable skills for expressing yourself through writing, story creation, and world building. Taking one of our creative writing workshops will help you unlock a new way to craft your personal story and share it with the world.

Information: Join us for our annual writing conference held at LMU, connecting Appalachian Writers, and helping them better their writing skills. Come back on campus and join us for a weekend packed full of writing and community. Featuring workshops in the topics of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction writing.

Information: Have you wanted to explore poetry in a new way? Then this workshop is for you! Join Poet Meg Wade, as she teaches creative techniques for creating poetry by using art. In this 2-day workshop participants will be 2 topics Ekphrasis, or a vivid depiction of a work of art and love poems based in the American south.
