Work Schedule – An average of 38 hours per week. In addition, we have an urgent care schedule. Currently, the schedule is 3 hours every other week, and a weekend shift every 2 months. The weekend shift does not include overnight care. 

Salary- Excellent salary and benefits, plus long-term opportunities for growth. Salary is based on experience plus percentage. New graduates start with a base of $85,000. Urgent Care is paid per case or percentage of revenue (the higher is provided).

Continuing CE- Our veterinarians attend monthly Buffalo Academy meetings featuring lectures by nationally known speakers. After your first year, we will pay for you to attend a national meeting – the stipend increases yearly starting at $1,500 up to $2,000.

Humane Society Externship:
Attention third and fourth year veterinary students! We have 10,000 sq. ft. full service practices housing an on-site Humane Society. Students are welcome to stay 2-12 weeks. During your stay, you can expect to do all the wellness care and surgical procedures for our on-site shelter animals. There will also be many opportunities to participate in numerous client medical and surgical cases. We are also now performing advanced orthopedic procedures weekly such as: TECA, TPLO, Tightrope, and THR. Hospitals are fully equipped with DR, in-house Heska equipment, heated surgical tables, Ultrasound, fluid pumps, the list goes on..! Externs work 5 days with 2 days off. There is a studio apartment on site (available at most locations). Students receive a reimbursement for gas and food of up to $100/wk. during their stay. Our practices stress high quality medicine and surgery in full service, state of the art facilities. 

Veterinary Hospital Externships:

CARE Animal Emergency Services Externship Opportunity: Located in the West/Southwest suburbs of Chicago, our Emergency services have been providing excellent overnight Emergent care for Chicagoland practices since October 2009. We see a wide range of walk in emergencies, case transfers from surrounding hospitals and referrals. Our goal is to provide expert care for patients by our experienced Doctors and staff. 
We are fully staffed with Veterinarians and Technicians who are specially trained in handling animal emergencies. Our facility features 10,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment. Hospitalized pets will be routinely monitored throughout the night ensuring they receive the best care possible while at our facility. 
During your externship with us, your nightly responsibilities would include:
*PE/Triage in exam rooms for Doctors
*Rounds with Doctors on hospitalized patients

*Assisting/ observing in emergency surgical procedures
*Assisting on cases in exam rooms
While you are with us, you will have opportunity to gain:

Typical surgical experience: Bloat/GDV, Gastrotomy/Enterotomy, Caesarian, Laceration repairs, HBC, etc.
Typical work schedule would be 3 Twelve-hour weekday shifts and 1 six-hour weekend shift. A break is given during the shift, when down time permits. Students receive a reimbursement for gas and food of up to $200.00 per week. Housing is provided, transportation is not provided.

The equine field service internship is primarily focused on equine general practice in an ambulatory setting.  Caseload is composed primarily of general health care, dentistry, lameness, ophthalmology, reproduction, and emergency management in the field.  The intern should have a primary interest in equine ambulatory practice, but will also spend approximately 14 weeks rotating through other services in the hospital such as equine medicine, equine surgery and rehabilitation, anesthesia, emergency and critical care, or farm animal medicine and surgery. The equine field service intern will be part of the house officer emergency team and rotate with other house officers on field service and in house emergency cases (both equine and food/farm animal related). The intern will accompany the emergency senior clinician on emergency cases and may have primary case responsibility with time and at the senior clinician’s discretion. The intern may be asked to cover daytime field service emergency cases. The intern will be expected to present an in-depth case report during faculty grand rounds at least once during the year.  The intern will also assist fourth year veterinary students in the field service section in preparing case reports for student grand rounds every 3 weeks. The intern will be encouraged to develop an interesting equine case into a report suitable for publication by the end of the program. 

Benefits:

Interns are given 10 personal leave days per year.  Interns are not required to obtain an individual license in the State of Tennessee.  A required orientation program begins on June 15, 2018; the last day of the internship is June 15, 2019.  Annual leave cannot be taken during June at the end of the program.

In addition to their clinical responsibilities, interns are expected to provide assistance in the instruction and supervision of final year veterinary students in the clinic. Interns are also permitted and encouraged to participate in pathology seminars, weekly lecture series, and special lectures offered throughout the year. Interns participate in a graduate seminar series twice yearly, and each intern is required to present one seminar to an audience of faculty, staff and students. Interns are encouraged to prepare a clinical report suitable for publication. Access to a medical library, a selection of current medical textbooks, the internet and search engines for scientific literature searches is provided.

This will include training in preventative medicine, diagnosis and management of diseases commonly seen in shelter pets on individual as well as population levels, evaluating and managing behavioral health and welfare issues, and addressing public health concerns. These experiences will be gained by working with shelter pets coming through our third and fourth year Surgical Education/Shelter rotations as well as through working with our shelter partners. The intern will receive direct supervision, as well as participate in supervising third and fourth year veterinary students, and working independently with faculty supervision as needed.
3. Specialty rotations within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital or outside the university – approximately 28%. One to two week required rotations include ICU/CC, Internal Medicine Soft Tissue and Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Dentistry and Dermatology. The intern will schedule two additional weeks within the teaching hospital or through outside experiences and could include approved welfare/shelter partners, general practice, pursue an independent research project or a specific experience with mentor approval.

Benefits:

Work Schedule - Average weekly schedule is 38 hours, as well as minimal emergency and holiday service at our emergency locations.  The current emergency rotation is one weeknight every 2 weeks and one weekend every 2 months.  The emergency shifts are paid in addition to base pay.

Salary- Excellent salary and benefits, plus long-term opportunities for growth. Salary is based on experience plus percentage. New graduate starting salary is $85,000 with 20% of gross salary on production over the base pay.   Emergency pay is per case or percentage of revenue (the higher is provided)
