Participate in National History Day!

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (ALLM) welcomes students and teachers who are interested in conducting research for National History Day. As one of the largest privately held collections of items and books on the life of Abraham Lincoln, the ALLM can aid students as they search for primary sources. Likewise, the Museum staff possess a wide range of research and technical abilities, and are happy to mentor students through the research, writing, and technical processes.

What is National History Day?

2018 National History Day Theme: Conflict and Compromise in History

This year's NHD theme is Conflict and Compromise in History. From our materials on the Missouri Compromise of 1820 to the battles and decisions made during the Civil War, the ALLM is prepared to assist you as you explore and write about a topic related to this year's theme. Each year, NHD provides a theme book to guide student projects. Click on this link to access this year's theme book.

Where can I compete in my state?

Located at the intersection of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, the ALLM is pleased to aid any student or teacher in the surrounding area who may be interested in participating in National History Day. Click on the links below to learn how you can compete in your home state.

How can the ALLM be a resource to me?

The ALLM is happy to provide research, development, and technical support to students who are participating in National History Day. Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, we will hold specific, free National History Day workshops on the following topics. It is not necessary to attend all sessions to receive the benefit of the workshops. Please note that a tour of the Museum must be scheduled separately from the workshops.

  • Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 1:00pm: Finding Inspiration for National History Day
  • Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 1:00pm: Using the ALLM Archives for Your National History Day Project
  • Saturday, December 9, 2017, at 1:00pm: Avoiding Plagiarism in Your National History Day Project
  • Saturday, January 27, 2017, at 1:00pm: Reviewing Your National History Day Project

If you are a local teacher (Claiborne County, TN; Bell County, KY; Lee County, VA), we are happy to bring these workshops to your class. Please call 423-869-6607 for more information.

Your students may also be interested in attending our Digital History Workshop Series that is for the General Public. These workshops can aid students who are using digital databases for their primary source hunts. We are also happy to schedule a special workshop session for your class. The cost to tour the Museum is $2.00 per student, and the workshop can be added on as a free addition to your tour.
