Chilren's Appalachian Music Workshops June 17th to June 21st - Give the gift of music to your little ones! In these week-long workshops, preschoolers aged 3-5 will learn the basics of music (pitch, rhythm, and focused listening) and explore the rich traditions of Appalachian music and storytelling through fun and educational activities including guided play and dance. Led by spirited musician Rachel Schott, children and their caregivers will use their imagination to go fishing, dance in autumn leaves, and hike with Daniel Boone through the Cumberland Gap! We have two times to choose from: Session I (6:00pm–6:45pm) or Session II (7:15pm–8pm).
Acoustic Music Week July 8th to July 13th - Head to the "Cumberlands" to hone your skills as an instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter and forge new friendships in the very region where much of America's music is rooted. This week-long workshop is led by internationally known bluegrass artist Steve Gulley and many of his award-winning musical friends specializing in guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, bass, singing, and songwriting. All skill levels welcome!
Story of Us: Devised Theatre Workshop June 3rd to June 7th - Drawing from personal memory and a combination of writing prompts, songs, story circles, and local “micro-expeditions”, we will develop performance pieces in and around sites of cultural heritage and geographic beauty throughout the historic Town of Cumberland Gap. This week-long workshop will be led by Amy Brooks, Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Cardinal Cross Arts Company.
Music Within: Devised Songwriting Workshop June 3rd to June 7th - Using principles of Appalachian storytelling, we will develop community-based songs inspired by one another’s life experiences and local “micro-expeditions”. Lyrics, music, and movement will be devised using a “create it forward” method, culminating in a group performance by all. This week-long workshop will be led by Hilarie Rose Spangler, Co-founder and Co-Artistic Director of Cardinal Cross Arts Company.
YouthSpeak: Theatre Workshop June 17th to June 21st - Empowering youth to tell their stories their way! Using a combination of writing prompts, story circles, and devising exercises, participants will work individually and collaboratively to create scenes inspired by their life experiences, culminating in a series of performances by all. Open to young teens aged 12-14. This week-long workshop will be led by Co-founder and Co-Artistic Director, Trina Fischer and Creative Director, Holly Stone of Looking for Lilith Theatre Company.
Youth Painting Workshops June 10th to June 14th- Using a variety of prompts, references, and materials, we will explore self-expression through the art of painting. Following introductions to observation, color theory, and mixing, we will learn techniques in composition, depth, value, and perspective through a range of activities including portraiture, landscape, and still life renderings. Mediums include watercolor, tempera, and acrylic paint. Morning session is open to children aged 12-14. Afternoon session is open to children aged 9-11. This week-long workshop will be led by visual artist Miwa Batchelor.
Youth Printmaking Workshops June 10th to 14th - Learn the basics of monotype (single image) printmaking! Run multiple prints on a theme, or expand your visual imagery with multiple passes through the press. All participants will produce at least one image each day using a variety of novel materials and techniques, juxtaposing nature, art, and science. Morning session is open to teens aged 15-18. Afternoon session is open to young teens aged 12-14. These week-long workshops are led by Dr. Joseph Casey Cosgriff.
Acrylic Painting Workshop June 3rd to June 7th – Following an introduction to the qualities of acrylic paint and basic elements of composition, we will experiment with color through the art of painting. Using a selection of limited color palettes each day, we will explore how colors interact on canvas and a variety of other surfaces in a series of master, natural, photographic, and still life studies. Morning session will be open to teens aged 15-18. Afternoon session will be open to adults aged 19 and older. This week-long workshop will be led by Knoxville-based visual artist Emily Taylor.
Natural Construct/ions: 3-D Mixed Media Workshop June 17th to June 21st– With Nature as our theme, inspiration, and medium, we will explore techniques in mixed media through individual and group projects. Drawing from the works of artists inspired by nature, we will build nests, tree forms, figures, and permanent or temporary constructions out of a variety of media including sticks, grasses, vines, paint, and paper pulp. Morning session will be open to teens aged 15-18. Afternoon session will be open to adults aged 19 and older. This week-long workshop will be led by Knoxville-based visual artist Emily Taylor.

Playwright Intensive June 8th to June 13th - We will explore all aspects of a playwright’s life - submission, production, self-production, and social networking - and all dramatic formats - monologues, 10-minute, one-act and full-length plays. If you have never written anything before, attend. You will walk away with original material that works! If you write poetry, memoir, or novels, attend. We will learn how to adapt your narrative writings into stage-worthy stories of action with provocative dialogue. If you are an experienced playwright, you will get to explore this craft in a new and refreshing way. This weeklong residential workshop will be led by playwright Lisa Soland.
Poet Boot Camp June 16th to June 21st- This workshop is designed for those who are interested in creating work in a community of thoughtful and excited writers who want to get work done. After a guided session each morning, you will be free every afternoon to chase your ideas, set pen to paper, and use this precious time you've set aside to write. We will reconvene in the evening to share our work and celebrate what we find to be the most engaging parts of our creations. This residential week-long workshop will be led by creative writer Aaron Smith.
