LMU College of Dental Medicine offers a modern, competency-based Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) curriculum that thoughtfully integrates biomedical and behavioral sciences, dental sciences, interprofessional education, and comprehensive clinical training. Designed to foster critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, ethical practice, and a commitment to lifelong learning, the curriculum prepares graduates to meet the evolving demands of contemporary dental practice.
Students complete more than 2,500 hours of direct patient care through a carefully sequenced progression from didactic instruction to preclinical simulation and comprehensive clinical experiences. The majority of clinical education takes place in the state-of-the-art LMU Tower Dental College in Knoxville, Tennessee. In addition, students have the opportunity to rotate through a wide range of off-site clinical partners, including private practice settings and community health clinics throughout East Tennessee. These rotations provide valuable exposure to diverse practice models and patient populations, enrich clinical readiness, and further support the College’s mission of service by expanding access to care across the region.
Community-based dental education and service learning are integral to the LMU-CDM experience. Through partnerships with organizations such as Remote Area Medical and Appalachian Miles for Smiles, faculty and students work together to provide essential oral health services to underserved populations. These experiences reinforce the College’s commitment to improving oral and overall health outcomes while preparing graduates to address disparities in access to care and serve communities with compassion, skill, and purpose.
