Harrogate, Tennessee, Feb. 6, 2019 – Travis Gilmer, DVM, a graduate from Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine’s (LMU-CVM) inaugural class has been selected for the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) through the United States Department of Agriculture. The VMLRP pays up to $25,000 each year toward qualified educational loans of eligible veterinarians who agree to serve in a designated veterinarian shortage area for a period of three years.
Gilmer who hails from Scott County, Virginia, is an associate veterinarian at Valley View Animal Clinic in Gate City, Virginia, a mixed animal practice with two full-time veterinarians.
“The loan repayment program will allow me to be in a better place financially, while at the same time serving the area and people that I love and call home. It is such a blessing,” Gilmer said. “I will be able to reach my professional goals and dreams more quickly while also being better able to provide for my wife and kids.”
Gilmer earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Education from LMU. His experience at LMU and the quality of education he received led him to continue his studies there and pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
“I loved the fact that it is a small school with a small faculty and everyone is on a first-name basis,” Gilmer said. “You truly become a family when attending school there and the faculty is committed and invested in your education and success. The fact that I was able to be a part of the first class was also exciting.”
Gilmer credits the hands-on experience he received at LMU-CVM and the school’s clinical model for making him a practice-ready veterinarian.
“The faculty is very professional and I am so grateful to each and every one of them that played a role in my education so that I am able to practice veterinary medicine now,” Gilmer said. “I am truly blessed and grateful to receive this loan repayment opportunity.”
