LMU's Charlie Gee Receives Fulbright Award

Harrogate, Tennessee, June 25, 2018—Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) media communications Assistant Professor Charlie Gee was selected for a Fulbright Award by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The award is allowing him to spend the summer teaching in Croatia.

“The Fulbright Scholarship has allowed me greater access to different cultures,” said Gee. “I’ve adopted different pedagogical techniques, which I hope to implement upon my return. It’s been interesting being a ‘stranci’ [stranger in Croatian] interacting with the local populations.  Croatian students are curious about how American university systems work, schedules and teaching styles.”

Gee is in Croatia teaching courses and giving lectures at middle schools, high schools and universities in countries throughout the region. He discusses a range of topics from fake news to the unique culture of Southeastern United States. He is set to return in July, 2018.

Gee earned his doctorate from the University of Tennessee. He began his career in radio and later television news. At LMU, he teaches media communication classes in applied theory including editing, newsgathering and multiple camera production.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government with the goal of increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Gee joins the ranks of distinguished participants that include heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists and teachers. Among the distinguished Fulbright honorees are 58 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 31 MacArthur Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients and thousands of leaders across the private, public and non-profit sectors. Since its inception in 1946, more than 370,000 scholars have participated in the Fulbright program.
