Former Harrogate Veterinarian Returns Home to Teach at LMU-CVM

Dr. Kim CarneyHarrogate, Tennessee, April 9, 2018 – Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) has hired Kimberly Carney, DVM, as DVTC Clinical DVM.

Carney is no stranger to LMU or the Harrogate area, as she owned and managed the Harrogate Hospital for Animals from 2001 to 2014. During that time, Carney also served as an adjunct professor at LMU and helped teach and develop courses for its Veterinary Health Science and Technology program. In 2014, she moved to Santa Cruz, Bolivia in South America to serve as a professor of veterinary English, surgery lab coordinator and staff surgeon at the Universidad Autonomo Gabriel Rene Moreno/Christian Veterinary Mission.

“I think what has shaped my teaching philosophy or ability to relate to all students is the four years spent teaching in South America,” Carney said. “Living with cross-cultural stress and learning how to deal with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds has provided me with insight to assist students not just with their clinical skills, but also their personal development.”

In her new role, Carney will be tasked with supervising fourth-year students during their small animal rotation at the DeBusk Veterinary Teaching Center (DVTC) in Ewing, Virginia. She will also be part of small and large animal clinical and professional skills labs for all classes.

Carney graduated Magna cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Georgia (UGA) in 1999, and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, cum Laude from UGA in 2001. She went on her first international veterinary mission trip to Honduras in 1997 as an undergraduate student at UGA, where she provided training for cattle producers and taught local veterinarians horse handling and restraint. From there her passion for international veterinary work grew, and she has since traveled on veterinary mission trips to Bolivia, Kenya, Nepal and Thailand. Carney is fluent in Spanish and is also a certified instructor of English as a Second Language.

“I have always been passionate about teaching students real-life skills they will need to be ready for practice,” Carney said. “I am excited to join the dynamic team of faculty at LMU-CVM. I love the spirit of innovation and the eagerness of LMU-CVM to continually improve and stay on the forefront of veterinary education. Aside from the normal clinical rotations and labs, I am working on some ideas for international experiences and collaboration for students and faculty.”
