Harrogate, Tennessee, July 22, 2019— Twelve graduate education students and two faculty members from the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Carter and Moyers School of Education have embarked for a summer study abroad excursion in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia.
LMU is teaming with the Mongolian institution Ider University to engage in comparison of delivery of social services and education in the two countries. The eight-day trip includes cultural exploration and a service-learning project aimed at discussing the importance of early childhood literacy and development with lower income Mongolian families.
Dr. Mark Tichon, associate professor of education and director of the Master of Education Counseling Program, developed the trip’s itinerary to incorporate coursework that counts toward degree curricula. Throughout the eight-day trip, students will observations of Ider classes, visit primary schools and a women’s domestic violence shelter.
“This is a remarkable opportunity for our students and for LMU,” Tichon said. “Although LMU faculty and students have participated in other study abroad trips, this is one of the first times LMU is offering direct sponsorship of a study abroad excursion. For many of the students traveling this will be their first travel experience in a developing country. I am excited to see what our students will learn over the next eight days.”
The LMU students have collected educational materials to distribute to nomadic families during the service-learning project. “It is inspiring to see the students take the initiative to further enhance their experience,” said Dr. Duran Williams, assistant professor of education. “One of our students, Andrea Dyer, has secured 50 backpacks and purchased coloring books and crayons to go into them. Other students and LMU staff added bi-lingual books and educational toys as well.”
The students and faculty plan to present their experience at the Appalachian College Association Summit after they return.
