Annual and Endowed Scholarships

Lincoln Memorial University greatly benefits from the generosity of donors who have made annual and endowed scholarships possible for our students. Below is a list of LMU's Annual and Endowed Scholarships and information on how to apply. 

 

For new students:

If you are enrolling at LMU as a new student for the 2017-18 academic year, you will need to complete the paper scholarship application by February 28, 2017. Please click this link to download the PDF form. If you have questions, please contact finaid@LMUnet.edu.

 

For currently enrolled LMU students:

All currently enrolled students should submit the new online annual/endowed scholarship application by February 28, 2017. Please follow these steps to apply:

 

On MyLMU under the Quick Links tab, click the Endowed Scholarship application link and choose "Create Account." Enter your LMU Student ID (including any leading zeroes - for example, 0123467), and follow the prompts to begin the application process.

 

You can start the form at any time, and save your progress to complete later. All applications and supporting materials (such as recommendation letters) must be submitted online by February 28, 2017.

 

Please note that this online application is only for annual and endowed scholarships, and doesn't replace any other Financial Aid forms or processes. If you have questions, please contact finaid@LMUnet.edu.

Criteria: Recipient will be a P.A. student entering their clinical year, recommended by a P.A. program faculty. Scholarship awarded in the amount of $1,500 annually at P.A. White Coat ceremony if possible.

Criteria: The LMU History Dept. faculty will select two students, a rising junior and rising senior history major, who demonstrate outstanding promise and potential as historians. For rising senior award, special consideration is given to previous scholarship recipients. Scholarship funds will be awarded equally between the two recipients each year based on available fund balance.

Conrad Daniels Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a graduate of a Claiborne County high school;
  • The recipient may be either an entering or continuing student. If awarded to an entering freshman they must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.0 scale) or a composite ACT score of 18. If awarded to a transfer or continuing student they must have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.50;
  • The recipient must have an EFC number that is not Pell eligible but is less than the cost of tuition;
  • The scholarship may be awarded to the same person for consecutive years;
  • The criteria may be changed with permission of the donor.

Cottrell Family Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: To be awarded to a Junior or Senior in the Carter & Moyers School of Education who has maintained a 3.0 GPA and is a graduate of Cumberland Gap High School. In the event there is no qualified candidate from the School of Education, the award could go to a student, regardless of major, who meets the other three criteria.

Criteria: Business or music major.

Courtney Beryl Owens Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Created for Thomas Walker High School graduates and/or residents of Rose Hill, VA or Ewing, VA, should Thomas Walker High School ever cease to exist. Preference is to be given to a student demonstrating financial need.

Criteria: For a needy accounting or business major.

Criteria: Graduate of Murray County, GA, High School or surrounding area; GPA of at least 3.0; three letters of recommendation citing good character and citizenship.

Daisy and J.V. Carter Endowed Scholarship in Education

Criteria: For a student from Lee County or Wise County, Virginia, majoring in education, having a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The award can be repeated for subsequent years subject to the established criteria. LMU has the discretion to award the scholarship to a GPA-qualifying student in another discipline in the unlikely event there are no qualifying students.

Criteria: Worthy student of financial need.

Dave Chesney Annual Scholarship

Criteria: Graduate of Union County High School, maintain a 2.5 GPA, to be awarded to an incoming freshman from Union County High School. The student may receive the scholarship during the sophomore year. To be awarded at Union County High School Awards Program.

David McDonald Memorial Fund

Criteria: Annual cash award for the outstanding student in philosophy and/or religion.

David S. Dubose Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Demonstrated financial need.

DCOM Annual Scholarship

Criteria: For an athlete demonstrating financial need

Dellinger-Aulton Scholarship Fund

Criteria: Demonstrated financial need; history major.

C.W. and Gladys T. Bradley Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship criteria: Graduate of Murray County, GA High School or surrounding area. GPA of at least 3.0.

Application items required: three letters of recommendation citing good character and citizenship.

Delta Theta Sigma Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: The scholarship shall be awarded to an active member of the Delta Theta Sigma Sorority. Each award recipient must have completed pledging, have successfully crossed-over, and must be in good standing with the sorority and LMU. The member must be a full-time student and have a 3.0 GPA. In addition to the student's sorority activities, campus and community service will also be taken into consideration. Applicants must also have at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member or advisor. Members who have been inactive, either voluntarily or involuntarily, will be considered on a case to case basis depending on the circumstances for having been inactive, i.e., illness, family situations, or financial problems. They must have become full time students again and have been fully reinstated in the sorority. A past recipient who applies and qualifies may receive the scholarship again, if only one, and/or no one else, qualifies. The awards are presented to recipients at the Annual Awards Banquet in April.

 

Criteria for both the Delta Theta Sigma Sorority Annual Scholarship and the Delta Theta Sigma Sorority Endowed Scholarship will remain the same with the exception that the endowed scholarship criteria will also read: “In the event the Delta Theta Sigma Sorority should cease to exist as a viable organization then the Delta Theta Sigma Sorority Endowed Scholarship is to be awarded to either an education major, a nursing major or a medical technology major from the surrounding counties of Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky or Eastern Tennessee who meets the requirement of a 3.0 GPA, is a full-time student, is on track to graduation and is in good standing with the University.”

Criteria: Incoming Freshman from Lee County, Virginia. Preference will be given to students who are first generation college students and who demonstrate financial need. Any recipient of the scholarship must also show academic achievement, good citizenship and involvement in school and community activities.

Dr. Jerry D. Westerfield Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship is intended for an LMU-DCOM student from Russell County, Kentucky. Preference will also be given to a student from Ohio County, Kentucky. If there is no student from either of these counties, the scholarship will be awarded to an LMU-DCOM student from Central or Western Kentucky.

Dr. John Copeland and George Mears Wildlife and Fisheries Society Scholarship

Criteria: Eligible recipients for the Wildlife Scholarship based on active with the wildlife society.

Criteria: A Veterinary Medical Technology (VMT) student who is interested in equine medicine with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and is to be determined by faculty based on established criteria and a one page written letter by the recipient as to why he/she should receive the scholarship. Renewable annually to the same recipient or a new recipient can be chosen each year. The recipient must be a second year or bachelor degree VMT student (junior or senior).

Criteria: Awarded to a GED student with first preference based on merit followed by financial need. Preference will also be given to an education major student if applicable.

Ernest W. Fields Endowed Nursing Scholarship for Faculty Development

Criteria: Scholarship for a nursing student or to be used for a faculty development scholarship for any faculty member in allied health desiring to advance their education; income from the endowment is to be used in equal amounts to be divided between a student in nursing and an allied health division teacher who needs assistance to continue his or her education.

Harold M. Finley Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship criteria: Maintain a composite 3.25 gpa through the first seven semesters of high school; choose a college major only in the fields of business, education, computer sciences or ministerial studies. Applicants are to realize that an emphasis will be placed on selecting a student who is able to demonstrate financial need based on total family income and the number of siblings who may be enrolled in an institution of high learning.

Criteria: A student enrolled at LMU from Union County, Tennessee or the surrounding area. Jim Byrd Family Scholarship

Criteria:To be awarded to an LMU student from the Kingsport area attending LMU at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education. This scholarship may be awarded to either an undergraduate or a graduate student, according to the highest degree of financial need, as well as high academic achievement and character. (Annual award amount: $500)

Jim Byrd Golf Scholarship

Criteria: Worthy student with financial need.

Jim Whitt Annual CVM Scholarship

Criteria: Awarded to an incoming or current CVM student from the Commonwealth of Virginia who meets the program standards. If no one from Virginia is enrolled, the committee may make a selection from another state.

  • The recipient will be pursuing a major in the field of education or those who major in music and are involved in the LMU fine and performing arts program;
  • The selection of recipients will be at the discretion of the University Award’s Committee and will follow the committee’s approved policies and procedures
  • The recipient of the scholarship will be required to perform in various fine and performing art fields, work in small groups with local high school students giving them instruction on performance, recruit them to play in the LMU Pep Band, and recruit students for LMU. The recipient would also accompany University professors when going into local high schools for Master Classes in cooperation with visiting fine and performing arts lecturers. The student would be directed by the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Fine Arts;
  • The expenditure of money will be consistent with University policy for endowed scholarships, in that only the annual earnings of the endowment are to be awarded and will be accounted for through normal University channels;

Second Chance Annual Scholarship

  • A $1,000 annual scholarship for a junior/senior bachelor’s degree student who is not currently receiving an academic or athletic scholarship
  • For students who have previously been on probation, lost a prior scholarship, or whose GPA has fallen below a 2.5 average
  • The student must demonstrate determination and initiative to overcome their past circumstances (whether physical, psychological, academic or otherwise) and improve their situation
  • Top priority is given to those not receiving financial aid in the form of federal or state grants

Student Services Scholarship

Scholarship criteria: A full time undergraduate residential or commuter student having demonstrated leadership qualities through an active student life, with demonstrated financial need from the immediate ten-county Appalachian region of Harlan, Bell, Knox, Claiborne, Hancock, Campbell, Union, Lee, Wise and Scott Counties.

Application items required: Letter of request to Student Services Note: Student must have earned at least a cumulative 2.75 GPA or better, and must have completed at least one LMU semester.

Staff Senate Annual Scholarship

Scholarship criteria: An annual scholarship for LMU staff and their dependents that are eligable for the tuition benefit, to be used toward the purchase of books, has been established by the LMU Staff Senate. One $250 scholarship will be awarded annually (may be undergraduate or graduate) split between the fall and spring semesters.


Application items required:

  •  The applicant must write a letter to the Staff Senate addressing the reasons to be considered for the scholarship. The Staff Senate will then give recommendations to the Awards Committee for their final approval of the recipient for the scholarship.

Note: Children/dependents of current Staff Senate members are eligible. The scholarship will be awarded only to applicants who fit the criteria for need-based scholarships.

SWVA Alumni Chapter Graduate Scholarship

Southwest Virginia's Lincoln Memorial University Alumni Association has established a “Graduate Program” scholarship trust fund to reflect one measure of their support to Lincoln Memorial University and its student body. The scholarship program is to be administered by the Association's Scholarship Trust Fund Committee. This scholarship will be available to LMU graduate students who graduates from a high school located in Lee County, VA. The applicant must be enrolled or in the process of enrolling in a graduate program at Lincoln Memorial University.

The scholarship is to be given yearly in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500.00) with payment to be released to the college/student after a letter is received from the LMU Admissions Office stating that the student is enrolled in a graduate program at Lincoln Memorial University. The Southwest Virginia Alumni Scholarship Committee may decide not to give a scholarship in any particular year or may decide to give one or more scholarships, depending upon the availability of funds. The Committee may decide to increase the amount of the scholarship, depending upon the availability of funds. Only one grant will be given to an individual student per year. A grant is to be given for one year but may be renewed in a following year after resubmission of an application.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have been accepted into a graduate program.
  2. Have a need for funding assistance.
  3. Have three written recommendations from former University/College authorities.
  4. Have submitted a completed application.
  5. Have submitted an essay (not more than one double spaced typed page-12 font) as to why assistance is needed and future plans and aspirations of the applicant.

Application forms may be picked up at LMU Financial Aid Office or from a Southwest Virginia Alumni Scholarship Committee Member. Applications, letters of recommendations and a short essay are to be submitted to the Scholarship Committee Chairman.

LMU has the discretion to award the scholarship to a GPA-qualifying student in the unlikely event there are no qualifying students.

Vidya Research Fund

  1. Vidya Research Scholarship is open to CVM students who are interested in participating in veterinary research at the Lincoln Memorial University - College of Veterinary Medicine.
  2. Two scholarships will be offered in the Fall semester and one in the Spring semester.
  3. Interested students will identify an ongoing research project, complete the application and submit to Dr. Jason Johnson (Jason.Johnson02@lmunet.edu).
  4. Selected students will be expected to work on a project for at least 40 hours and on successful completion of their research duties, receive a stipend of $500.
  5. Any questions regarding the application process should be directed to Dr. Jason Johnson.

Criteria: Demonstrated financial need.

Walter S. Hogg Scholarship

Wayne Wells Memorial Communications Scholarship

  • Broadcast Communications major, junior or senior, with 3.0 or higher overall GPA and a 3.5 or higher GPA in major.
  • Be from the Tri-State area (KY, TN, VA)
  • Preference given to students with a record of service to community, civic organizations or veteran.

Whitaker Lawson and Margaret Chumley Orr Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: Student from the State of Tennessee, preferably Claiborne County; GPA of 3.0; nursing or medical technology major.

William and Anna Rhea Endowed Scholarship

  • Nursing major (ASN or BSN student)
  • First priority from Hancock County, TN
  • If no student qualifies from Hancock County, any area may be considered
  • Award based on financial need

William C. Davis and Janet Dallwig Davis Endowed Scholarship for Social Work

Criteria: Social work major.

William Edward and Mary Covington Crane Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: For a Nursing student at Lincoln Memorial University, with priority given to a student who has demonstrated a history of service to others.

William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: Economically disadvantaged student from Appalachian region.

William Smith Endowed Scholarship

William T. (Chid) and Belle M. Wright Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: For an Education major

Willie S. Gordon Scholarship

Women of Service Annual Scholarship

Criteria: Recommendation made by the LMU Women of Service

Women’s Relief Corps

Woods-Jones Endowed Scholarship

Zeta Tau Kappa Alumnae Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: For a student actively involved with the Zeta Tau Kappa (ZTK) sorority who has a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, or for a Sigma Pi Beta fraternity active member with cumulative GPA if there is no qualifying ZTK member. The award can be repeated for subsequent years subject to the established criteria. LMU has the discretion to award the scholarship to any GPA-qualifying student in the unlikely event that there are no ZTK or Sigma Pi Beta students who qualify. Students interested in this scholarship should also complete the ZTK Alumnae Scholarship Application Form.
