About Us

From the stage, to the CD, to the web, to the classroom, the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is a community of students, staff and faculty whose task it is to challenge the mind to enable learning, intellectualism, aesthetic development, creative thought and performance at the highest level.  Programs and courses are geared toward creative and intellectual expression, developing talent and supporting growth in critical thinking, analysis and content.  Instructors bring to the learning hearth the latest approaches and ideas in support of excellence in learning.  The School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences supports the liberal arts experience and is foundational to the general education of a well and fully educated individual.  The School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences supports all of LMUs majors with general education courses and elective courses, and with numerous minors that support and are essential to majors in other colleges and schools.

The School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is also home to the Army ROTC program of military sciences studies.  The Army ROTC program at LMU seeks to recruit, train and commission future officers of the United States Army, providing them with the skills to be leaders.

The mission of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is to provide academic programs and General Education courses that cultivate the values, skills, and perspectives essential for preparing university students for productive participation and leadership in a rapidly changing world. Inspired by the enduring principles of Abraham Lincoln’s life and legacy, the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences strives to promote research, innovation, scholarship, and creative expression.  At the heart of the LMU liberal arts experience is a commitment to a tradition and standard of excellence that fosters students’ intellectual, moral, civic, and creative capacities and aspirations in service to humanity through the advancement of life in the Appalachian region and beyond.
