Ben Smith joined LMU Law as an Assistant Professor and Director of Academic Success in 2017. From 2015 until 2017, Smith served as the Director of Academic Success and Professor of Legal Writing at Mississippi College of Law. He has also served as an Academic Success Counselor at the Florida Coastal School of Law from 2014 until 2015.

Smith graduated from the Florida State University College of Law, where he was an accomplished member of the Mock Trial team, winning 1st Place in the ABA Division of Labor & Employment Law Trial Advocacy Competition Miami Regional, before ultimately advancing to the Semi-Finals of the nation-wide competition. While in law school he also served as a Research Assistant to Professor Brian Galle, and was elected to serve as a senator in the Student Bar Association.

After law school Smith served as an Assistant General Counsel for the State of Tennessee Department of Children’s Services from 2008 until 2011. During his time with DCS he earned a reputation as a skilled litigator while prosecuting cases involving severe child abuse, child sexual abuse, child abuse, neglect and dependency; and also while representing DCS in administrative hearings regarding licensure of child care facilities and their employees. In 2011 he entered private practice where he has served as counsel to individual litigants, sole proprietors, and small to mid-size businesses; his practice areas included Commercial Litigation, Transactional Drafting, Civil Litigation, Employer and Employee Relations, Protection of Intellectual Property, Domestic Relations, Child Custody, and Dependency & Neglect.

Prior to law school, Smith earned his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he was the President of the Zeta Lambda chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity. Ben Smith was born and raised in South Knoxville, and is a proud alumnus of South-Doyle High School.

Smith sees the strengths and value in every student, and works tirelessly to enable his students toward success in law school in order to ensure their success in the practice of law. Outside of the law school, Smith has a passion for public advocacy, and has worked to on a number of successful political campaigns at the state and city levels. He relishes every minute he can spend playing in the water in the rivers and lakes of East Tennessee. Ben and his wife Maria live in Knoxville with their newborn son, Dexter.
