Lincoln Letters for Kids
How can I use LLFK in the classroom?
LLFK is designed to make kids interested in what can seem like a boring subject: history. But when issues that kids can relate to come up in the issues, like famous children involved in the Civil War, and Civil War codes and games are mentioned, children gain an interest in an otherwise boring time period full of only dates and names. When a child shows interest in a particular aspect of the episode, encourage them to do their own research about that aspect of the Civil War. Are they curious about what children might have felt during the Civil War? Encourage their creative side by challenging them to write a short story or diary entries for a fictional character. Or email me at
natalie.sweet@lmunet.edu for hands-on Civil War crafts and activities.
For the kids, can they reach you by email or by regular postal mail?
The kids can reach me with their questions or share what they’ve learned about the Civil War by contacting me by either my email address or the regular postal address. After all, there was no such thing as email during the Civil War!
Is there any cost to receiving Lincoln Letters for Kids?
LLFK is a free publication. However, since we do have to work with a limited budget, the occasion may arise that that a limited number of publications may be sent to your classroom. However, the publications are easy to copy on any copy machine.
Can we arrange for a special Lincoln Letters for Kids tour?
Of course. The publication will be used in the tour and a special scavenger hunt
will be used to totally immerse the children in the history of the Civil War.
However, please notify Amy Lane that you would like Natalie Sweet to be your
tour guide.
If we take the tour, is there any cost?
There is no additional cost to a LLFK tour. It’s the same rate as any other school tour, however if any of your students are card-carrying members of Lincoln’s Army, their admission will be free when they present their membership card and are accompanied by a paying adult. For every child, an adult must be present in able to receive the free admission.
How can I arrange for someone to come to talk to my class?
