The research collection of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum houses one of the largest collections of Lincolniana in the world. The documentary resources include a wide-range of historiography and iconography, pertaining to Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War era. The 19th century sources include rare books, pamphlets, Civil War sheet music, military histories and rosters, manuscript collections, photographs, newspapers, broadsides, and commemorative relics which honor the life and legacy of the "Great Emancipator." Additional sources span the 18th century to the modern era.
In 1997, the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, with the assistance of the NHPRC (National Historical Publications and Records Commission) began an archival and preservation project to catalog and improve physical and intellectual access to these significant documentary resources of Lincoln Memorial University. Two of the largest manuscript collections processed during the initial phases of the project were the papers of Cassius Marcellus Clay, the Kentucky anti-slavery abolitionist, and the original papers of the Abraham Lincoln Collection.
