III.       Prerequisites:                None

 

IV.       Course Description:  Special problems dealing with topics related to business. The team will conduct projects and prepare for competition. 

 

V.        Relationship of this course to content area knowledge and skills:  This course will give students real experience in all areas of business. Students will plan and carry out educational projects and analyze outcomes. The course also requires interaction with area executives known as our Business Advisory Board.

VII.            Course Objectives:

·      Helping people achieve their dreams through free enterprise education.

·      Giving students the opportunity to reinforce their business knowledge by helping others understand specific areas of business or finance.

·      Gaining a better understanding of how free markets work in a global economy

·      Understanding how entrepreneurs succeed by identifying a market need and then profitably producing and marketing a product or service to fill that need

·       Honing the personal, entrepreneurial, communications, technological and financial management skills needed to successfully compete

·      Practicing business in an ethical and socially responsible manner that supports the principles of a market economy

 

VIII.     Outline of Course content:

            The SIFE team will travel to Atlanta in April to compete in a regional event. This course is designed to complete projects and prepare for that competition. Each student will be required to contribute to the team’s success in various ways to earn their way to Atlanta and earn their grade. Tasks required include but are not limited to:

·      Managing media exposure for team activities

·      Writing an annual report summarizing our activities for judging

·      Preparing an audio-visual presentation for competition

·      Maintaining professional contact with Advisory Board members

·      Fund raising

·      Communicating efficiently and effectively with fellow team members and the Sam Walton Fellow (Instructor)

·      Conducting or assisting team projects

·      Developing ideas and plans for new projects

·      Printing of materials for projects and competition.

IX.       Evaluation Methods:

Students will develop and negotiate a contract. This contract will outline the students’ specific required performance for the grade they wish to achieve from the class. The students’ final grade will reflect the agreement made at the beginning of the semester and how well they fulfilled their agreement.

            At each meeting students will update their time sheet. Students will also have periodic reviews (as in the workplace) to discuss their position in the class and quality of their work.

            Grade will be based of the quality of the following:

·                Meeting Attendance and Participation

·                Responding to e-mail and other communications promptly

·                Project Participation

·                Competition Preparation

·                Competition Attendance

·                Other contributions under item VIII above
