I.                    Vet 270, Surgical Preparation and Anesthesia, 4 Semester Hours

II.                 Spring Semester 2003

III.               Prerequisite:  All previous Vet Tech courses

COURSE        IV.       AnesthesiaTo understand anesthetic procedures in preparing an animal for

DESC.                         surgery.  To gain a knowledge of the different anesthetic routes of administration

and duration of action.  The student must obtain a complete understanding of the stages of anesthesia and the essential monitoring techniques and devices used during surgery.  Pharmacological drugs used as pre-anesthetics and ancillary drugs during surgery will also be discussed.

Surgical PreparationA study of surgical preparation and assistance procedures in reference to common surgeries performed by veterinarians.  This course will encompass all aspects of preparation of the pre-operative patient and after-care of the post-operative patient.  Includes an overview of instrumentation, suture material and patterns and aseptic technique.  This course allows “hands on” experience through its lab.

COURSE        VI.       The student will learn to assist in common veterinary surgeries and realize the

OBJ.                           importance asepsis and pre-op and post-op care.  The student will also learn the essentials necessary to prepare an animal for surgery and maintain an animal before, during, and after surgery.

METHODS

OF INST.        VII.      Lectures, labs, and visiting lecturers, video presentations

METHODS    VIII.     Surgical preparation:  There will be 4 tests and a take home final exam each being

OF EVAL.                  equal value.  There will be approximately 9 articles to read with questions to be turned in on time.  These will average as a test grade.  The lab will comprise 20% of the total grade.  Students must be on time.  Each absence after the first will result in a 10% reduction of grade.

Anesthesia : There will be three written tests which will count 30% of the

anesthesia portion of your final grade. The remaining 10% of the anesthesia

will be earned through short quizzes which will be given at the end of

            each lecture period.
