COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will introduce students to the body parts and functions of animals such as the cow, horse, dog, cat, sheep, swine, and birds from a veterinary approach.  Terminology of this field will be a primary objective with emphasis on organ parts and systems within each animal example.  Major differences and similarities between animals will be covered.  Emotional bond between companion animals and people also discussed.

 

TEXTBOOK: Clinical Anatomy and Physiology for Veterinary Technicians 1st edition (2002) by Colville and Bassert.

 

READINGS:  Additional readings and work may include handouts and Internet sites

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

·         Describe the animal body in veterinary medical terms.

·         Explain homeostasis and its significance to normal body operation

·         Identify the anatomical components studied and explain the physiological mechanisms described in the following systems:  Lymphatic, Immune, Respiratory, Nervous, Urinary, Endocrine, Metabolism, Human and Animal Bond.

 

EXAMINATION AND GRADING:  Course grade for lecture will be based on four examinations and class

attendance and participation.  The instructor reserves the right to normalize the overall grades and/or any individual set of grades.

Students are expected to take exams as scheduled.  If you have a legitimate reason for missing an exam, please see me as soon as possible.  Make-up exams will be given by appointment only.  The format of the make-up exam is at the instructor’s discretion and may differ from the original exam.  Class attendance is expected.
