COURSE
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of MEDT 497, the student
will be responsible for attaining the following objectives:
1. Review objectives from Blood Bank,
Hematology, Hemostasis, and Serology, which
were studied last year.
2. Complete and submit applications for the ASCP
Registry Examination and the State
of Tennessee Licensure; place order for MT pin for the Pinning
Ceremony.
3. Describe the elements of a good resume and
proper preparation for a job interview.
4. Apply educational methodology by writing five
“registry style” questions in an
assigned area.

5. Enhance writing skills at the college senior
level by completing an assignment for
Writing
Across the Curriculum. Details of
this assignment are given on the last page
of this syllabus.
6. Demonstrate mature behavior by attending
class on time and being prepared to
discuss the “Topics of the Day” as
indicated on the Lecture Schedule,
which is
appended at the end of this syllabus.
7. The ultimate objective of MEDT 497 is that
graduates will be able to demonstrate
top-notch skills and a strong work ethic
in their careers and achieve a passing score
on the certification exam.
EVALUATION
METHOD: This course is graded as follows:
A = 90 -100%
B+ = 87
- 89 %
B = 83
- 86 %
B- = 80
- 82 %
C = 73
- 76 % in order to pass this
course.
C- = 70
- 72 %
F = Below
60%
There will be written exams, scheduled quizzes,
case studies, homework, computer practice, and a Writing Across the Curriculum assignment in this class.
Independent performance is expected on all
work. When you take the board exam as a
graduate, you sit alone--just you and what you know. The University’s policy on academic integrity
as stated on page 39 of the LMU Undergradute Catalog 2003-2004
will be strictly applied in this class.
Class attendance is expected. Make-up exams will be given only with a valid
excuse and by appointment only. The
format of the make-up exam is at the instructor’s discretion, and will differ
from the original exam.
Assignment of grades will be based upon:

Hematology/Coagulation Review 25% of total grade
Serology/Micro Review 20% of total
grade
Comprehensive Final Exam 20% of total grade
Writing Across

MEDT 497
The Medical Technology faculty strongly endorse
the philosophy that our baccalaureate graduates need excellent writing skills.
ASSIGNMENT: Select an article of medical interest from
any of the professional journals listed below.
The article must be dated 2003-2004
and consist of a minimum of three journal pages in length.

1.
Prepare a critique of the article using APA writing style. Include a
title page and a
reference page also.
2.
Summarize the article in your own words.
Include the author’s major premise (key
point), any research methods, and data that
support his conclusion.
3. In
your conclusion, critique the author’s presentation of information. Explain why
you
chose this article, and discuss the most intriguing fact that you learned from
your
reading.
OBJECTIVES
OF THE ASSIGNMENT: Students will have the opportunity to
achieve the following objectives:
1. Become
acquainted with professional journals in the field of laboratory medicine.
2. Review
APA writing style.
3.
Enhance writing skills at the college senior level.
4.
Exercise critical thinking skills.
GRADING: This short paper, due on March 11th, should
be submitted in Microsoft Word format on a computer disk, as well as in paper copy. The assignment will be graded on writing skills--including
punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, paragraph organization, and written
expression. The grade on this assignment
will comprise 10% of your total
grade in MEDT
497. In
fulfillment of LMU’s requirement for
sequential enhancement of writing style (SEWS), your paper will be forwarded to
the Chair of the SEWS
Committee
and kept on file. Submission of an acceptable paper in this course is
documented on your transcript as a passing grade for MEDT 497-Z, and it is a requirement
for graduation from the University.
