Conference
Time: Instructors will be available for 30 minutes
after clinicals
for student conference as needed.
CO-REQUISITE: MEDT 330--Immunology and Serology
COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This clinical practice focuses on
application of lecture material studied in MEDT 330. Students learn to
confidently perform and interpret procedures that are common to the Serology/Immunology
section of the hospital laboratory.
Taught at the clinical affiliate.
TEXTBOOK: The same textbook that is used in lecture
will be utilized also in
clinicals.
METHODS OF
INSTRUCTION:
Observing procedure
performed.
Performing procedure
with supervision.
Reporting of actual
results with supervision.
Written assignments,
quizzes, and lab practicals.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this clinical rotation,
the student will be responsible for attaining these objectives:
1. Adhere to all rules for laboratory safety at
the clinical site.
2. Review department policies and procedures as
presented in the S.O.P. manual.
3. Confirm that each specimen is appropriately
labeled, properly collected, and
acceptable for testing according to S.O.P.

4.
Demonstrate proper pipetting techniques, as demonstrated by the
instructor.
5.
Perform and calculate dilutions of serum, as demonstrated by the
instructor.
6. Be
able to explain the principle of each serology procedure performed at the
clinical
site.
7.
Correlate positive serological test results with disease states; identify possible causes
of
false-positives or false-negatives.
8.
Perform QC with acceptable results for each procedure.
9.
Demonstrate the ability to perform each assay (as listed on the
checklist at the end of
this syllabus) according to S.O.P.
10. Organize both single and batch assays to
perform them in a timely manner, as
prescribed by the instructor.
11. Document and report results according to
departmental guidelines of the clinical
affiliate. Demonstrate neat and legible paper work,
and carefully verify that
computer entries are accurate before
releasing results.
12. Evaluate test results for sources of error,
and initiate corrective action.
13. Differentiate between the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of serologic tests
performed.
14. Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work
area.
15. Respect the authority of the instructor and
follow instructions exactly.
16. Demonstrate amicable working relationships
with the clinical partner and all others
in
the department at the clinical site.
17. Project a neat, clean, and well-groomed
appearance at the hospital.
18. Achieve an overall accuracy of 80% (or above)
on written assignments, quizzes, and
lab practicals.
19. Report to the hospital on time. Tardiness to the clinical affiliate on three
occasions
will be counted as an unexcused
absence. Two unexcused absences will
result in
failure. (See
M.T. Student Handbook.)
20. The ultimate objective of this clinical
rotation is that the student will be able to
confidently work in the Serology/Immunology
section of any laboratory, following a
two-week orientation period for that
specific lab.

EVALUATION
METHOD: This clinical rotation is graded as PASS or FAIL in accordance with
departmental policy. Students must meet
all objectives on this syllabus and demonstrate entry-level competency before a
passing grade will be assigned. A checklist for the Serology clinical rotation
is appended at the end of this syllabus.
With ultimate regard for student safety, there
will be no clinicals if it is snowing.
However, any missed clinical must be made up at the instructor’s
convenience. Students are responsible
for notifying the clinical site if they are unable to attend clinicals for any
reason. Telephone numbers are listed on
the first page of this syllabus.

TO THE INSTRUCTOR: Please evaluate each procedure with regard to
entry-level competency and evaluate as satisfactory,
unsatisfactory, or incomplete. In order to receive a satisfactory evaluation, the student must meet the clinical
objectives as stated on the syllabus. Any area evaluated as unsatisfactory requires documentation in
the comment section on the next page. An incomplete
may be given if additional time in clinicals would correct a slight deficiency.
The test procedures listed below are considered
the minimum requirements of the Serology/ Immunology clinical rotation. We
encourage each clinical affiliate to expose the student to as diverse an
environment in Serology as possible.
These are YOUR students--train them to be the type of M.T. whom you
would be proud to work alongside!
