V.                 Course Description:  Principles and procedures concerning the organization, administration, supervision, planning, budgeting, evaluation and legal responsibilities in physical education, sport and athletic training programs.

 

VI.              Relationship of this Course to Content Area Knowledge and skills:

            Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

1.                  Have the knowledge and skills to understand the purposes of physical education and sports at all levels.

2.                  Know their responsibilities in the area of legal liability and act in the best interest of their students, athletes, or pupils.

3.                  Know the importance of communication of the program goals and objectives to parents, students, community, and other faculty/staff members.

4.                  Demonstrate an understanding of administration, management, and leadership and be able to implement these in any given area.

5.                  Identify community programs and services that are available.

VIII.         Course goals and outcomes:

1. Identify the different theories of administration and management.

2. Identify the purposes of physical education activity classes, and sports for recreational and competitive purposes at all levels.

3. Identify the responsibilities and duties of an effective administrator.

4. The student will demonstrate appropriate communication skills.

5. The student will demonstrate appropriate record keeping skills with sensitivity to patient confidentiality.

6.  The student will demonstrate the ability to disseminate injury prevention and health care information.

7. The student will demonstrate the ability to intervene and make the referral to appropriate medical or allied medical professional.

8.  Identify varying health insurance plans.

9.  Identify common human-resource policy and federal legislation.

10.        Discuss and identify the components of recruiting and public relations for an athletic/athletic training program.

 

IX.              Course Objectives

1.                   Identify community resources available to an administrator.

2.      The student will access and use contemporary multimedia and software as it relates to physical  education, sport, and athletic training.

3.       The student will develop athletic training or physical education facilities and administrative plans, including

a.       basic floor plan design

b.      facility evacuation

c.       basic rehabilitation and treatment area plans

4.     The student will demonstrate the ability to develop administrative plans that include but are not limited to, the following components:

a.       risk management

b.      developing policies and procedures

c.       developing budget (expendable and capital)

d.      addressing facility hazards.

5.    The student will

a.       effectively communicate with allied health care community and athletic team members.

b.      Appropriately communicate with athletic personnel and family members

c.       Use ethnic and cultural sensitivity in all aspects of communication

d.      Communicate with diverse community populations.

6.     The student will develop a presentation for an athletic training/sport related topic. The presentation must be suitable for the following audiences:

a.       athletic trainers

b.      physicians

c.       parents

d.      athletic personnel

e.       general public

f.        athletes

7.   The student will develop a professional resume.

8.   The student will:

a.       Simulate intervention with an individual who has a substance abuse problem and recommend appropriate referral.

b.      Simulate a confidential conversation with a health care professional/ athlete/ coach/ friend suspected of substance abuse

c.       Locate the available community based resources for psychosocial intervention.

XIV.         Course Requirements/ Methods of Assessment/ Evaluation

       Attendance is mandatory.  You will have 2 “free misses.”  Two unexcused absences will result in a 10-point deduction from your final grade. Any student attending all classes, with excused absences, will receive 10 points added on to the final grade.

 

        Read and complete all assignments on schedule.  Late work will not be accepted

        after the due date.  No exceptions.
