IV.       COURSE DESCRIPTION/COURSE GOALS

                        The school health programs course will prepare the student in identifying and                              Familiarizing themselves with the community agencies and resources. The                              Student will participate in the assessment of elementary school children’s health,                               and develop projects relevant to school health programs as well as prepare                                    Instructional materials for grades K-12.  Emphasis will be placed on School                               Health Services, School Health Education, and Healthful Living, as well as                                 Home and Environmental Health.  Students will:

                        -develop interpersonal skills necessary to promote good health

                        -have an understanding of ability to apply biological, social, emotional,

                         and environmental concepts that promote wellness

                        -have the ability to use appropriate health appraisal procedures

                        -recommend referrals when necessary

                        -prepare school health guides for grades K-12

                        -develop areas of need for today’s child

 

  V.      RELATIONSHIP OF THIS COURSE TO CONTENT AREA KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS                               This course will provide information that will prepare the student to become                                      teachers who are aware of the biological, social, emotional and environmental                                 concepts that promote wellness and sound living.  Each student will develop a                               philosophy of health education and the components of comprehensive school                                      health education.  The student will develop the ability to articulate and                                        communicate effectively the goals of the health education program to  students,                          colleagues, administrators, and parents.  The Health 340 student  will develop the                            ability to act as a resource person in health education services.  This course will                                 help the student to identify and describe risk factors, causes,  symptoms,                                            transmission mechanisms, treatment procedures and methods  of control and                              prevention of non-communicable and communicable diseases including sexually                          transmitted diseases.  Emphasis will be placed on teaching  the ability to describe                             positive personal health practices that promote wellness, including personal                                   hygiene and physical fitness.

VII.      COURSE OBJECTIVES

                        Students will…

                                    -develop a philosophy of Health Education

                                    -review historical bases of Health Education and school health programs

                                      and health of the children

                                    -discuss health goals for the nation relevant to schools

                                    -identify responsibilities of a teacher regarding the school health program

                                     and the health of the children

                                    -define the school health programs and describe the major components

                                      which are School Health Services, School Health Education and

                                      Healthful Living

                                    -identify and discuss procedures for evaluation of the school health

                                      program (student, teacher, and program)

                                    -identify and describe normal health status of elementary children

                                    -identify and describe the comprehensive school health and state the

                                      purposes of school health education

                                    -familiarize themselves with the Health Curriculum Guide of the

                                     state of Tennessee

                                    -review current school health education literature relevant to school

                                      health education

                                    -identify and become familiar with community agencies and resources

                                      through services offered to elementary schools

                                    -develop appropriate health education instruction plans and implement

                                      instructional strategies to students

                                    -recognize areas of need concerning school health programs for their

                                      home areas
