III.       COURSE PREREQUISITES/CO-REQUISITES/RECOMMENDED             ANTECEDENTS

                        Students are recommended to take HLTH 230

 

IV.       COURSE DESCRIPTION/COURSE GOALS

                        The goal of this class will be that the students understand total wellness                          and trends dealing with health in their daily lives.  Some of the topics to be              studied will be eating disorders, dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse,

                        lack of physical fitness, environmental problems, occupational hazards,                          systems of  the body, and emotional health.

 

V.        RELATIONSHIP OF THIS COURSE TO CONTENT AREA KNOWLEDGE         AND SKILLS

                        The course is designed to contain all objectives, course goals, knowledge                                  and skills dealing with the critical areas of health in everyday life                                        situations.  We will deal with wellness in all phases including physical,                                  emotional, and mental so that the student will be able to cope with all                             health related situations when this course is completed.

VII.      COURSE OBJECTIVES

                        These course objectives will be mastered by the end of the course:

                        1.         To learn about total wellness and prevention methods.

                        2.         To study good nutrition and diet

                        3.         To become familiar with sexually transmitted diseases

                        4.         To cover environmental problems dealing with the air we breathe,                                              water we drink, greenhouse effect, etc.

                        5.         To discuss healthy skin, hair, nails, and feet.

                        6.         To discuss healthy teeth, eyes, and ears.

                        7.         To learn about systems of the body.

                        8.         To cover drug and alcohol abuse including tobacco and caffeine.

                        9.         Teenage pregnancy and the reproductive system will be covered.

                        10.       Emotional health, suicide, depression, stress and self-esteem will                                                be covered.

                        11.       Physical fitness and its importance will be discussed.

                        12.       Aging and death will be covered.

                        Week 1 thru Week 3

                                    Total wellness and prevention methods

                        Week 4 thru Week 5

                                    Physical fitness

                                    Reproductive system

                        Week 6 thru Week 8

                                    Skin, hair, nails, and feet.

                                    Teeth, eyes, and ears.

                        Week 9 thru Week 10

                                    Digestive system

                                    Drug and alcohol abuse including tobacco and caffeine

                        Week 11 thru Week 13

                                    Emotional health, suicide, depression, stress, self-esteem

                        Week 14 thru Week 16

                                    Child accidents, athletic injuries, and the nervous system

                                    Aging and death

                                    Other issues T.B.A.

                25% outside readings

                25% special projects

                25% tests

                25% participation

 

XIII.     CLINICAL/LABORATORY/FIELD EXPERIENCES

                        Health Departments, Nursing Homes, hospitals, funeral homes, and                               various other facilities will be visited by the group.
