COURSE DESCRIPTION:  A&P I is the first in a two semester course designed to introduce students to the anatomical and physiological principles that underlie medicine, nursing, or related fields.  Basic structure and function of cells, biological chemistry, cellular respiration, protein synthesis, cell division, homeostatic mechanisms, body tissues, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, digestive, and circulatory systems will be covered.  The laboratory will allow for the study of detailed anatomy and physiology, along with experiments that illustrate principles covered in lecture.

TEXTBOOK:  Concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology 5th edition (1999) by Van De Graaff and Fox.

Lab Manual:  Laboratory Manual: Concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology 5th edition (1999) by Van De

Graaff and Fox.

READINGS:  Additional readings may include handouts and Internet sites

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

·         Describe the body in terms of planes, sections, regions, etc.

·         Explain the chemical composition of a cell including its inorganic and organic components.

·         Describe the activities of DNA and RNA in maintaining cellular operation.

·         Explain homeostasis and its significance to normal body operation

·         Describe cell structure and function.

·         Identify the anatomical components studied and explain the physiological mechanisms described in the following systems:  Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Digestive, and Circulatory.

EXAMINATION AND GRADING:  Course grade for lecture will be based on three examinations and class

attendance and participation.   Course grade for laboratory will be based on 10 quizzes in laboratory and

three laboratory practical examinations.  The instructor reserves the right to normalize the overall grades and/or any individual set of grades.
