   IV. Course Description:

 

       Nature and properties of soils.  Physical, chemical, and

       biological processes in soils and their influence on plant

       growth.

   VI. Course Objectives:

 

       To familiarize the student with soil processes and

       structural controls that influence effective plant

       growth.

 

       To enable the student to better judge the suitability of

       soil for plant propagation and to be able to modify the

       media for successful plant growth.

 

 

  VII. Methods of Instruction and Learning: 

 

       This course involves weekly lecture periods and collateral

       laboratory periods.

       Lecture periods will consist of expansion and

       interpretation of text materials.

       Information will be presented orally as well as through

       use of audio/visual media as needed.

       Laboratory exercises will be completed utilizing collected

       field samplings as well as prepared materials.

 

 

 VIII. Course Requirements/Evaluation Methods:

 

               Lecture -  Two (2) equally weighted exams will be

                          given during the term.

 

               Laboratory -  Students will complete various lab

                             exercises utilizing prepared

                             materials as well as collected field

                             samples.  Simple soil analysis

                             methodologies will be employed.

                             Periodic lab quizzes will be given dealing with

     mathematical soil character.

       No extra credit is available for this course.

 

 

   IX. Units of Instruction: 

 

       Mid-Term Exam will cover materials presented in chapters 1

       through 7, exclusive of chapter 3.

 

       The final lecture exam will cover materials included in

       chapters 8 through 17, plus chapter 3.

 

       For the most part we will cover these chapters as ordered

       in the text.  Deviations from this will be noted.
