General course content: While many people are expected to speak in public at one time or another in their lives, few are prepared much less comfortable enough to do an effective job. Communication through public speaking is an art as well as a skill, and this class will bring the two aspects together. Students will learn not only effective methods of preparation, practice, delivery, and coherence of a public speech, they will also be given the opportunity to develop confidence in themselves and their knowledge.
The major assignments include ten class speeches of various lengths and on various subject matter. The speech subjects and methods are broken down as follows:
Speech one: informative, 3 minutes, subject chosen by instructor
Speech two: informative, 3 minutes, subject chosen by student
Speech three: persuasive, 3 minutes, subject chosen by instructor
Speech four: persuasive, 3 minutes, subject chosen by student
Speech five: informative with visual aids, 3 minutes, subject chosen by instructor
Speech six: informative with visual aids, 3 minutes, subject chosen by student
Speech seven: interview, interactive, 5 minutes, subject chosen by instructor
Speech eight: interview, interactive, 5 minutes, subject chosen by student
Speech nine: persuasive with visual aids, 5 minutes, subject chosen by instructor
Speech ten: persuasive with visual aids, 5 minutes, subject chosen by student
There will also be two (2) extemporaneous speeches, subject and time given at the discretion of the instructor. (Think of these as the pop quizzes of speeches.) The final will be an eight (8) minute speech given during the exam time as listed for this class. It can be persuasive or informative and must include visual aids and research must be turned in as soon as the speech is given.
Grading and attendance policies: You are allowed three (3) absences. Each absence after that will drop your final grade one full letter grade.
The ten speeches are worth ten (10) points each, for a total of 100 points.

The library has recently gone through a serious update and you would be well-served to acquaint yourself with it as soon as possible. Also, the internet is your best friend, so use it, know it, love it.
