Required text:  Baran.  “Introduction to Mass Communication, Media Literacy and Culture 2001 Update”

General course content:  Mass media holds powerful possibilities and to properly understand it one must have responsible and accountable relationships with it.  It will not be of any use to remain a passive receptor in this society, as controlling the communication is controlling the direction of the society itself.  From the history of media through the generations and developments therein, we will explore and experiment with the languages, abilities, outcomes, and repercussions of various media.  Students will be expected to not only recognize the languages and methods, but will leave the class conversant in a variety of communications.

The major assignments include four active projects developed within various media styles and presented to the class as befits the language of the project.  A final exam will be given in class on the appropriate date.  Students are expected to keep up with the readings and participate in the discussions.  There will be five in-class or take home writing assignments given at the discretion of the instructor.  Thorough development and communication is expected and length will be chosen at time of assignment.

Grading policies:  You are allowed three (3) absences.  Each absence after that will drop your final grade one full letter grade.
