IV. COURSE DESCRIPTION: A studio course utilizing a group instructional approach to musical and keyboard skills in a lab setting.
V. TEXT: Bastien, Jane, Lisa, Lori. Piano for Adults Book One; (San Diego: Kjos Music Press, 2001).
VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Show a basic knowledge of piano technique and musicianship
2. Play simple melodies with accompaniment
3. Demonstrate music reading skills and a basic knowledge of harmony, chord structure, and
rhythm.
VII. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING: Group practice, lecture, demonstration,
concert attendance.
VIII. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION METHODS: Two class meetings per week.
. A minimum of three (3) documented practice hours per week. Attendance in class is required
unless an emergency arises or arrangements are made with me prior to the absence.
Attendance at two (2) events on the LMU Community Concert Series, plus written critiques. Assessment of playing will be done in four areas. These are: correct notes, rhythm, steadiness of tempo, and overall technique. Grading scale: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, F=59 or lower.
IX. COURSE OUTLINE: The personalized nature of the course precludes the use of an outline, as
the students are practicing repertoire appropriate to their own levels of ability.
