  V. TEXT: None

 VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. To develop the student's ability to plan interestingly

balanced compositions and to improve technical proficiency in the

          chosen medium.

2. To encourage the student's ability to originate ideas for

   paintings that are personally meaningful.

3. To encourage the student to freely discuss her/his own work

and that of others in group critiques.

VII. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING: The primary method of

learning is studio practice supplemented by guidance

from the professor, demonstrations of various techniques, informal group interaction, and class critiques.

VIII.COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION METHODS:

1. Regular class attendance. Due to the nature of a studio class,

attendance is required. only with regular attendance can a  student benefit from guidance from the professor while work is in progress, interact with and learn from the group, and adequately complete studio assignments. The professor, therefore, may lower the final grade of a student with more than two absences, excessive tardiness, or excessive early departures from class.

2. Completion of all assignments by due date. All work will be

turned in for evaluation twice during the semester -- once at         mid-term and once at semester's

end. Any work missing, incomplete or turned in late will   result in a lowered grade. Work will count as

85% of final grade.

3. Participation in group critiques. Periodically there

will be critiques of assignments. Work should be ready    and complete for critiques. Serious, thoughtful, and perceptive comments about one's own and others' work are encouraged.

4.  Final Project. A final project will be due during the

regularly scheduled exam period for a final critique. This project must be original and executed during this semester. It will count as 15% of final grade.

IX. UNITS OF INSTRUCTION:

Suggested subject matter for paintings includes the following:

1.  Realistic or distorted depictions of still life, head

    studies, self-portraits, figures, room interiors,
