IV.       COURSE DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES

This course is a survey of British literature from 1660-1785.  This course will aid students in developing a complete chronological perspective on British literature in order to better understand how literary “periods” arise out of, and in reaction against, each other.  At the same time, we will improve our knowledge of the social and historical contexts by examining both the mainstream intellectual developments that characterize the Enlightenment, and some of manifestations of these ideas, and others, in everyday life.   Students will also gain experience in the close reading of texts, in the research of topics and literary works, and in the writing of analytical and researched papers.

V.        TEXTS / REQUIRED READINGS
