IV. COURSE
DESCRIPTION, GOALS, OBJECTIVES
This course is a chronological survey of
British literature from the Romantic period to the early Twentieth
Century. Students will become
acquainted with what have traditionally been regarded as the major writers and
works of the periods, while at the same time examining the issue of canonicity
and the place of "minor" authors.
We will also place works in their historical context, attending to
political, social, and intellectual developments throughout the period
covered. Throughout the course, individual
works will provide us with opportunities to refine our skills in textual
analysis.

VIII. COURSE
PROCEDURES
Regular
attendance is required; for each absence beyond 4, your course grade will be lowered by 10 points.
Participation in class discussion is
expected and will affect final grade.
Texts should be read carefully, more than once, to
acquire sufficient familiarity for discussion.
Reading quizzes will usually be
unannounced and cannot be made up. I
will drop your lowest quiz grade provided you
have not missed any quizzes.
Plagiarism--representing another's
work as one's own--will result in a failing grade for the
paper and perhaps the course, at my discretion.
