Cinco De Mayo dinner -
May 5, 2010
On the 5th of May, 2010, people gathered at LMU-DCOM to celebrate a 148 year old Mexican holiday. Food served included Tacos, Fajitas, burritos, guacamole and other Mexican favorites. Cinco de Mayo is a holiday primarily celebrated in Puebla and the United States and is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. On this date, SOSA hosted a dinner “can drive”. All cans that were collected went to benefit the Cooperative Christian Ministry in Middlesboro, Ky. A total of 226 cans were collected and valued at $150.00. SOSA is not only interested in serving the future surgeons of LMU-DCOM, but is also committed to serving the community surrounding it.
Third Annual Golden Scalpel Golf Tournament -
April 24, 2010
On Saturday April 24, 2010, the Student Osteopathic Surgical Association hosted its 3rd annual Golden Scalpel golf tournament at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell, TN. Twenty-one teams participated, with a total of 84 players comprised of LMU-DCOM students, faculty, physicians, and local residents. The event raised 5,000 dollars for Harrogate’s Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic that was held on May 22 and 23, 2010 at the Tex Turner Arena on the LMU campus. Thanks to the tremendous support from the community, the Golden Scalpel continues to grow each year and SOSA plans for 2011’s tournament to continue this trend and be another great event for everyone to enjoy.
SOSA Annual Conference - Spring 2010
Some officers attended the annual SOSA conference in the spring of 2010 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry School of New Jersey. The conference allowed for great opportunities such as a suture clinic on the cadavers in the anatomy lab and chest tube placement on the cadavers. There was a mini workshop on gloving and gowning in a sterile environment and the opportunity to become familiar with laparoscopic equipment. There was also another mini clinic on placing catheters in female patients using a mannequin. There were several guest speakers on various surgical topics to allow more exposure to different areas and specialty within the surgical field. Along with the highly educational opportunities provided, the conference did have dinners and allowed time in the evening for students to mingle and get to know other students interested in the same field and specialties. |
