The
Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the nation's oldest and
largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and
concerns of medical students of color. Established in 1964 by medical
students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical
College, the membership includes more than 7,000 allopathic and
osteopathic medical students, pre-medical students, residents and
physicians. In its first year the LMU-DCOM SNMA members hosted several successful events which included: “Adopt a Family” Christmas gifts for local children in need, an international dinner, a lecture on health disparities to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, free blood pressure testing with the Tennessee American Red Cross, and a collaborative fundraiser with the Health Equity Club for World Malaria Day.
