The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the membership includes more than 7,000 allopathic and osteopathic medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians.

The SNMA is dedicated to ensuring culturally sensitive medical education and services, with a focus SNMA on reducing morbidity and mortality in under-served communities.

The local SNMA chapter at LMU-DCOM is the newest in Region X, which encompasses the 6 chapters in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee.

In its first year the LMU-DCOM SNMA members hosted several successful events which included: “Adopt a Family” Christmas gifts for local children in need, an international dinner, a lecture on health disparities to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, free blood pressure testing with the Tennessee American Red Cross, and a collaborative fundraiser with the Health Equity Club for World Malaria Day.

Future events will continue to accomplish our goals of:

Educating our local community about healthcare disparities and underserved medicine.
Fostering a diverse environment with cultural activities and events.
Educating our fellow SNMA members about Osteopathic Medicine and it’s contributions to underserved medicine.
