Healthy LMU and U

Keeping U Healthy Keeps LMU Healthy!

August 27, 2009

Dear LMU Parents/Guardians,

As many of you know, the H1N1 virus (called Swine Flu) has been in the news media over the last few months. We at LMU do not have reason to be overly concerned at this moment, but we want to inform you of the proactive steps we have taken to help maintain a healthy environment for the students, faculty and staff here at LMU.

We have established steps for our students to follow in case they feel ill. Our Department of Outpatient Services has established a set of procedures to process individuals who report flu like symptoms. All procedures are based on the Centers for Disease Control advisories. We are also posting H1N1 virus updates on the LMU website. We have prepared and distributed a fact sheet for all our students and a pocket card for the students to carry to remind them of the symptoms of H1N1.

We have also established a campus wide educational program involving posters, residence hall personnel, custodial staff and our department of security. Our program is called “Healthy LMU and U.” We are encouraging the use of hand sanitizers around the campus and classrooms. Staff and students are encouraged to: wash their hands frequently; use alcohol based hand sanitizers; cover their nose and mouth when they sneeze or cough and stay away from those who are sick. Students who are sick themselves are encouraged to stay at home or in their dorm rooms and recuperate until their symptoms have been gone for 24 hours.

Telephone numbers are available for students to call if they feel sick and/or need transportation during regular business hours of LMU. There are two hospitals in close proximity to LMU for after hours care. The hospitals are ARH in Middlesboro, Ky., and Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell, Tenn. Residence Life and Security are available to assist in meeting needs of ill students after business hours.

We want to assure you that our plans and priorities are to protect the LMU family. We are looking forward to a productive and healthy academic year.
