2008 ACA Ledford Scholar Awards

Congratulations to the recipients of the FY 08-09 Appalachian College Association Ledford Scholar Awards. They include:

  • Matthew Brock
    The Land that Shaped a Legend: American Geographies Impact on Abraham Lincoln
    Advisors for the project are Dr. Barry Vann, Associate Professor, Education and Geography, and Tom Mackie, Director, Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum.

  • Rebekah Haynes
    "We Are Coming Father Abraham": Contemporary Sheet Music of the Civil War
    Advisors for the project are Steven Wilson, Assistant Director and Curator, Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum and Michelle Ganz, LMU Archivist and Cataloger.

  • Sabrina Hester
    A Needs Assessment for the Middlesboro Independent School District Projects the Certified Personnel Openings Due to Retirement
    Advisor for the project is Dr. Okie Wolfe, Professor of Education.

  • Katie Zion
    Pharmacy Employee Perceptions of the Cost Impact of Medication for Senior Patients in Rural Appalachian Communities
    Advisor for the project is Dr. Kay Paris, Associate Professor, Social Work/Chair, Department of Social Sciences.

Mini-Grant Awards

The LMU Mini-Grants Program was initiated in FY 07-08 and was intended to annually fund promising investigators in a variety of scholarly projects while enhancing the overall research environment of the University. Recipients of the FY 08-09 LMU Mini-Grant Awards were recently announced. They include:

  • Dr. Joanna Badara "An Examination of Bacterial Contamination in Norris Lake, Tennessee:  A Research Partnership With Tennessee Valley Authority",

  • Dr. Ann Callahan "Exploring Relational Spirituality in Hospice Care",

  • Elissa Graff "Documentation of the Cumberland Gap Landscape in Enamel", and

  • Dr. Agnes Vanderpool "Determining the Impact of Shoreline Development on Water Quality in Norris Lake, Tennessee".

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum was recently awarded a $26,025.00 grant from Save America’s Treasures (National Park Service, Institute for Museum and Library Services) to fix some of the museum's most treasured flags. Steven Wilson, Assistant Director and Curator, was principal grant writer and project director. Congratulations to Steven and the entire Library and Museum staff for their achievement and for their tireless efforts in keeping some of the museum's most valuable treasures preserved and protected.
