  4. When in doubt, “C” is not always the correct answer.
  5. Relationships are one of the most important resources you have for college success! Make sure the ones you rely on are helping you be successful!
  6. Just because you’re not looking at it doesn’t mean it goes away.
  7. Got High Adventure? Call Rick Stowe at 423.869.6811
  8. LMU Security- To Protect and Serve. Call LMU Security at 423.526.7911
  9. Don’t say there’s nothing to do around here. We have 20,000 acres of National Park right across the road.
  10. We all need help sooner or later. The best students know when to reach out for assistance.
  11. Check out the library. It's more than musty old books. The librarians can help you navigate your way through information overload.
  12. Remember that there is free tutoring available at the Tagge Center for Academic Excellence.
  13. Do you have a few hours to kill during the afternoon? Email Rick Stowe (rick.stowe@lmunet.edu) to schedule a time to come to ropes course.
  14. Go to class. Go to class. Go to class. Did we mention going to class?
  15. When the going gets tough, the tough go swimming…..Floyde Anne Gardner 423.869.6243
  16. Want to stay in shape? The Mary Mars Fitness Facility is available every night from 7PM-11PM.
  17. You know when you’re struggling in a course. Don’t wait until mid-term grades to do something about it! See your advisor, a tutor, or give Larry Thacker at call at 423.869.6433.
  18. If you're living on campus, get to know your RA (Resident Assistant). They can provide valuable information and resources/connections to make the transition to college easier!
  19. Set Goals! 1. Set realistic goals, within timelines (in writing in your planner) 2. List strategies to complete goals 3. Evaluate progress 4. List potential obstacles 5. List strategies to overcome obstacles 6. Follow through! (Your course syllabi may be useful in determining timelines and goals.)
  20. Sit near the front of the class to avoid distractions. And, if there is something you don't understand, don't be afraid to ask questions!
  21. When studying, make flash cards by writing "fill in the blank" statements on the front of index cards and answers on the back. And, DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE THE TEST TO STUDY!
  22. Little known fact, you should use a loose-leaf notebook (rather than spiral bound) for note-taking. In top corner, label each page with date and title. This method gives you control of and fast access to your course notes! (Even more important - TAKE NOTES!!!)
  23. LMU uses your LMU email address as our "official email address". Once you are accepted to the university, you should have access. Get in the habit of checking your email daily (if not more)!
  24. Lock your room/apartment/building doors! Do not prop doors open or leave them unlocked. Colleges (like home) are only as safe as YOU make it.
  25. Homework making you hot? Come cool off in the pool. Floyde Anne Gardner 423.869.6243
  26. If you have questions about class material ask your professor. Professors at LMU want you to succeed.
  27. There are many areas in the library that are designed for studying. Find your spot early in the semester. It will help later on.
  28. There's a database for that. The library has access to databases on many topics and subject areas. Get comfortable using the databases. They will be very helpful as you write papers.
  29. Take short breaks while you study and don't cram the night before a test. While you may remember the information for the test, it will not help you in the long run.
  30. Try studying in groups. It can help to hear someone else's perspective on a topic. Remember that there are no bad questions. Get comfortable asking questions about things you do not yet know the answer to.
  31. Watch out for activities on campus. Get involved. It will make your time here so much better! Don't forget to have fun while you are at LMU!
