LMU Golf Teams Do Well At Anderson Fall Invitational

ANDERSON, SC – The Lincoln Memorial University men’s and women’s golf teams both competed over the weekend in the Anderson Fall Invitational Tournament held at Brookstone Meadows Golf Course in Anderson, South Carolina.

The Lincoln Memorial men’s team made the strongest showing, placing 5th overall with a total team score of 589 behind opponents Tusculum College (578), Anderson University (580), Wingate University (583) and North Greenville University (588).

The back half of the field consisted of Mount Olive College in 6th place (599), Limestone College in 7th (609), St. Andrews Presbyterian College in 8th (611), and Tri-County Community College in 9th with a 636.

LMU Nolan Butler, Craig McLaughlin, Aaron Hammons and Charlie Hawes all finished inside the top-20.  Butler turned in rounds of 73 and 73 for a total 146 to finish two strokes back in a tie for 11th place.  McLaughlin recorded scores of 74 and 73 for a final 147 to finish three strokes off the lead with and in a tie for 14th place, while Hammons and Hawes each turned in 74’s for both rounds to tie for 19th place overall with a pair of 148’s.

LMU’s Jeremy Gordon of Middlesboro, Kentucky shot a 78 and an 80 for a final two-day total 158 to finish 14 strokes off the lead in 33rd position to solidify the Railsplitters 5th place finish.

The LMU women were led by junior Sarah Ross.  Ross had a tremendous first day turning in a 76, but fell off the lead in day-two of the tournament with an 89 to finish with a total 165 in 13th place overall.

Senior Rachel Spurs was somewhat off her normal performance.  Spurs struggled in day-one with an 84, and then cut two strokes off her second day total by turning in an 82 for a final 166 to finish in a tie for 14th place.

Lady Railsplitter Sarah Oswalt and newcomer Courtney Jeter both finished back in the pack.  Oswalt posted rounds of 93 and 90 for a 183 to finish with a 183 in a tie for 37th place, while Jeter shot a 102 and an 89 for a 191 to finish 43rd.

The 8th place finish by the Lady Railsplitters put them behind opponents USC-Upstate (1st place, 620), Tusculum College (2nd place, 652), Wingate University (3rd place, 663), Anderson University 4th place, 668), Mount Olive College (5th place, 689), Queens University (6th place, 691) and Limestone College (7th place, 702).

Finishing behind the Lady Railsplitters in 9th place was Presbyterian College with a two-day total 820 to round out the field of teams.

Both Lincoln Memorial University golf teams will be in action again when they travel to Greeneville, Tennessee to participate in the Tusculum College Fall Classic to be held at Link Hills Country Club October 1-3.
