OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release March 13, 2007 Railsplitter Golf Team Wins LMU Invitational Tournament
Lincoln Memorial put two teams in the tournament with and Railsplitter Team A turned in scores of 299 and 288 for a two-day total 587, only 11 strokes over par to finish in first place among the four teams participating.
Second place was taken by Walters State Community College. Walters State posted a team score of 304 on Monday, and then finished Tuesday’s round with a 301 for a final 605, 29 strokes over par and 18 strokes behind LMU.
Lincoln Memorial’s Team B finished third in the invitational with a 343 and a 305 for a final 648, 72 strokes over par while Kentucky State University took the fourth spot with rounds of 344 and 335 for final 679.
Individually, Railsplitter senior Aaron Hammons (Saline, Michigan) finished as the medalist. Hammons shot an even par 72 in Monday’s round, and then cut three strokes off of Tuesday’s final 18 holes to finish with a two-day total 141, 3 strokes under par for the tournament. At the end of the final 18 holes Hammons was tied with Walters State’s Dustin Davis but Hammons quickly seized victory on the first playoff hole.
LMU’s Josh Collins (Luttrell, TN) finished third in the tournament. Collins had rounds of 73 and 70 for a final 143, one stroke off the lead, while Railsplitter junior Jeremy Gordon (Middlesboro, KY) was fourth with a 78 and a 69 for a final 147. Charlie Hawes (Surrey, England) came in closely behind in fifth place with a pair of 74’s for a total 148 while Steve Cambron (Middlesboro, KY), Justin Edwards (Kingston, TN) and Nolan Butler (Suffolk, VA) also finished inside the Top-10. Cambron shot a 75 and a 76 for a 151 to finish the tournament in sixth place and Edwards and Butler placed eighth and ninth respectively with a total 155 and a 157.
Lincoln Memorial’s only other players in the tournament, Justin Leach (Knoxville, TN) and Jamie Ventura (New Tazewell, TN) finished with scores of 161, tied for thirteenth place and 189 in nineteenth place.
This weekend the Railsplitters will compete with Tusculum College in match play at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee. -LMU- For additional
