Brevard Hands Lady Railsplitter Tennis Team 5-4 Loss To Open 2007-08 Season

BREVARD, NC – The Lincoln Memorial University women’s tennis team traveled to Brevard, North Carolina over the weekend and was defeated 5-4 in the opening match of the season by future South Atlantic Conference Brevard College.

The Lady Railsplitters received three of their four wins in singles play.  LMU’s Martina Rezic (Pula, Croatia)  defeated Brevard’s Jenny Lewallen in the #2 singles match 6-0, 1-0, retired while teammate Rachel Redmond (Somerset, KY) won in the #4 singles match 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 over Sara Douglas.  LMU’s final singles victory came at the #6 position when Sophie Denlinger (West Milton, OH) defeated Brevard’s Merek Slagle 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

On the losing end of singles play Saturday was Lady Railsplitters Kathleen Rollet (Bouge Chambalud, France) who lost to Lindsay Shaeffer 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, while LMU freshman Emily Osborne (Middlesboro, KY) was defeated by Kimberly Dixon in straight sets 1-6, 0-6.  Brevard’s Kayley Duval also defeated LMU’s Mandy Mills (Tazewell, TN) 1-6, 1-6.

In doubles play, LMU’s lone win came at the #2 position when Redmond and Mills won over Duval and Douglas 8-6 while Rollet and Rezic were defeated in #1 doubles by Dixon and Shaeffer 4-8 and Osborne and Denlinger were defeated 8-0 by Lewallen and Kimberlee Cooper.

The Lady Splitters' next match will be September 30 when they play host to West Virginia State on the Annan Courts.  The match will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
