Sokolova Named LMU Female Athlete Of The Year

HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial University women’s tennis senior Helena Sokolova (Kosice, Slovakia) was named Female Athlete of the Year at the University’s annual athletics banquet held Monday evening on the LMU campus.

Sokolova, a four-year letter winner and two-time All-American at LMU, finished the 2007 spring schedule with an individual record of 17-1 and was ranked as high as #15 nationally in NCAA Division II women’s tennis this year.

Throughout her four-year career as a Lady Railsplitter tennis player, Sokolova has compiled a 60-5 overall mark in singles and an overall doubles record of 63-17 from the #1 and #2 positions.

In addition to her tennis accomplishments, Sokolova also ran cross country for the Lady Railsplitters, helping them capture 1st place in two different meets this season, finish second at the South Atlantic Conference Championship and the NCAA Southeast Regional meet and earn their first ever trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship meet.

Some of Sokolova’s other accomplishments while an athlete at Lincoln Memorial University include being named to the University’s Dean’s List, the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll, GSC Eastern Division Freshman of the Year and being named to three consecutive All-Gulf South Conference Teams.

Although the Lady Railsplitters weren’t conference eligible this season in the South Atlantic Conference and didn’t qualify for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, the LMU women had a successful season, finishing the year with an overall record of 11-9.  Sokolova is a Kinesiology major and will receive her degree in during the May commencement ceremonies at LMU.
