Lady Railsplitters Win Tight Battle With Wingate

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University women’s tennis team advanced to the final four of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Monday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over visiting Wingate University.

Despite cold weather and damp conditions, the two teams completed the match, something not many teams throughout the South Atlantic Conference were able to do on Monday due to the nasty weather conditions throughout the region.

Wingate took the lead 2-1 following doubles competition, with the combination of LMU's Emily Osborne and Nicole Combs winning the third doubles match.  LMU fought back to tie the match at 4-4 with singles wins from Kathleen Rollet, Rachel Redmond and Mandy Mills.  It all came down to a marathon meeting at #2 singles which lasted almost an hour longer than the other flights.  Sophie Denlinger picked up the tie-breaker win in the third set to help LMU advance to the next round.  Every member of the LMU squad picked up a win on the afternoon.

The Lady Railsplitters (8-8) entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, knocking off the No. 5 Bulldogs for the second time this season.  LMU will now face the winner of the Mars Hill vs. Carson-Newman match on Friday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  That match has been pushed back later in the week due to rain.  Wingate ends it’s season at 9-15 on the year.
