LMU Women’s Tennis Begins Spring Schedule With 5-3 Road-Win Over Lees-McRae College

BANNER ELK, NC – The Lincoln Memorial University women’s tennis team officially kicked off the 2008 spring schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-3 win over the Lady Bobcats of Lees-McRae College on their home court in Banner Elk, North Carolina.

The Lady Railsplitters' Kathleen Rollet (Bouge Chambalud, France) and Rachel Redmond (Somerset, KY) set the tone in #1 doubles play with an 8-6 win over Lees-McRae’s Christine Vanard and Cameron Joyce.  In #2 doubles, LMU’s Sophie Denlinger (West Milton, OH) and Emily Osborne (Middlesboro, KY) were defeated 8-2 by the Lady Bobcat’s Andrea Balazova and Amanda Naciemento.  At the #3 doubles position, Lady Railsplitters Martina Rezic (Pula, Croatia) and Mandy Mills (Tazewell, TN) rolled over LMC’s Katie Hawkins and Atalie Teague 8-2.

In singles play, Kathleen Rollet defeated Christine Vanard in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at the #1 position, while Martina Rezic knocked off LMC’s Andrea Balazova 6-3, 7-6 at #2 singles.  In the #3 singles match, LMU’s Sophie Denlinger fell to Amanda Naciemento 1-6, 2-6, while Mandy Mills was defeated in the #4 singles match by Lee’s-McRae’s Cameron Joyce 2-6, 1-6.  LMU’s final victory came in the #5 singles match when Rachel Redmond defeated opponent Katie Hawkins 6-4, 6-3, while Emily Osborne’s match at the #6 position went unfinished 4-6, 1-1.

The Lady Railsplitters will now use weather permitting days to prepare for their February 23 road match with the University of Virginia-Wise.  On that date, the Lady Railsplitters and the Highland Cavaliers will get underway at 11:00 a.m.
