OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release November 3, 2007 Bulldogs Finish Perfect SAC Season With 3-1 Win Over LMU Wingate, N.C. – The Wingate University Bulldogs beat the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-24, 30-27) Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. With the win, Wingate improves to 30-1 overall, and a perfect 14-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Railsplitters fall to 19-14 overall, and 5-8 in the conference. Senior setter Melissa DeLuca (Bahama, N.C.) dished out 68 assists, and became Wingate’s all-time assist leader. She has 4,717 assists in her Bulldog career. DeLuca added 19 digs and four kills on the night Freshman middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) had a game-high 21 kills for Wingate. Fellow freshman Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, Ky.) had 15 kills. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.) and junior outside hitter Kathryn Reddick (Franklinton, N.C.) had 14 kills apiece. Wingate had a season-high 80 kills to go along with a season-high 115 digs. Junior libero Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.) led the way with a school-record 36 digs. Gale had 14 while Myklebust and Brittany Horner (Roxboro, N.C.) had 12 digs each. Sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Hankins (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led the Lincoln Memorial attack with 15 kills. Amanda Baker (Los Banos, Calif.) and Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had 12 kills apiece. Freshman Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, Ohio) had 46 assists for the Railsplitters, to go along with 12 digs. Sophomore libero Alicia MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind.) had a team best 29 digs. Karlee Wyrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 17 digs while Baker had 15. Wingate got out to an early lead in the first game, going up 16-10. The Railsplitters would not get it closer than four the rest of the game. Two kills from Gale and one from Myklebust gave Wingate the final 30-24 margin. The Bulldogs hit .375 in the game, while LMU hit .200. The second game stayed tight throughout, with 13 ties and five lead changes. The Bulldogs had a 12-10 lead, but the Railsplitters went on a 5-0 run to take a three point lead. The game would be tied again at 18 and 20, with LMU having the answer both times to retake the lead. Wingate tied the game one more time at 24, but the Railsplitters scored the next four points. Baker and Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each had a kill while Horenkamp added an ace. Knight put the game away with a kill, and a 30-27 win. Lincoln Memorial hit .264 for the match, while Wingate hit .167. Wingate jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game three. Gale had three kills in the opening stretch. The Railsplitters fought back to cut it to four at 10-6. Wingate answered back by extending the lead to 21-10.Gale had four more kills in that stretch. Lincoln Memorial answered back again, cutting the lead down to three at 24-21, but the Bulldogs stretched the lead back out and finished it with a kill from Myklebust. Wingate hit .271 in the pivotal third game, while LMU hit .204 In game four, Wingate once again got out to a 7-1 lead. The Bulldogs held a 10-3 lead when the Railsplitters mounted another comeback to eventually tie the game at 16, then take a one point lead on an ace from MacIntyre. The lead grew to 20-17, capped by an ace from Baker. Wingate tied the game at 21 on an ace from Myklebust, then retook the lead on a Bloemer kill. Wingate would not trail again, getting two more kills from Bloemer and two from Gale, including the final point of the match for a 30-27 win. Wingate hit .149 in the fourth game, while LMU hit .123. The Bulldogs hit .227 for the match, with 80 kills and 28 errors. The Railsplitters hit .204, with 58 kills and 18 errors. Wingate took advantage of 11 service aces, led by Myklebust and Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, Ohio) with three apiece. Lincoln Memorial racked up eight blocks, while the Bulldogs had four. Wingate enters the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament as the number one seed for the second straight year. The Bulldogs will take on Mars Hill in the first round on Friday, in Jefferson City, Tenn. Lincoln Memorial will play a final regular season match on Monday, when they travel to Kentucky State for a 5 p.m. start. -LMU- For additional
