Lady Railsplitters Take Round One With Kentucky State

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University volleyball team took the first meeting between Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Kentucky State University 3-0 on Tuesday night in LMU’s Mary E. Mars Gymnasium.

Lincoln Memorial came out a little lack-luster, hacking out a 30-23 victory in the first game of the night.  As the evening wore on and the Lady Railsplitters loosened up a little in game-two, the points started coming easier and LMU was able to come away with a convincing 30-20 win.

Although LMU led two games to none going into the final game of the match, LMU Head Coach Mike Smith wasn’t sold on several of his players performances.  That prompted Smith to play his entire bench and while the younger less experienced players had to battle, they were able to finish the job the starters began with a 30-27 win in game-three to secure the win over the Thorobrettes.

Alison Hess (Dayton, OH) carried the Lady Railsplitters at the net, notching 14 kills on the night, while setter Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, OH) handed out 34 assists.  On the defensive side, Alicia McIntyre (Muncie, IN) had 15 digs, while Kiwacka added 11 and outside hitter Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, TN) had 10.  Hess was as intimidating on the defensive side of the net as she was effective on the offensive side.  The sophomore had five block assists to led LMU, as Kiwacka contributed four.

The Lady Railsplitters are now 19-10 overall and will face Kentucky State University again in Frankfort, Kentucky on November 5 for their regular season finale.  Before the two teams can play that date however, LMU must run a gauntlet of conference opponents on the road which includes Catawba, Newberry, Tusculum and Wingate.  That runs begins Friday night when LMU travels to Salisbury, North Carolina to take on the Catawba Indians.
