HARROGATE, TN – On Tuesday night, in front Lincoln Memorial University’s entire athletics family and honored guests, Lady Railsplitter volleyball player Amanda Baker (Los Banos, CA) was named the 2008 female recipient of the B. Frank Turner Award.

The Turner Award is given each year in memory of former LMU athlete and trustee, B. Frank Turner.  It is awarded to a male and female athlete that best exemplify athletic ability, academic achievement, and good citizenship.

Baker, a two-year letter-winner at Lincoln Memorial University, holds an Associate of Arts Degree from Merced College where she was a Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member.

While attending Lincoln Memorial University, Baker is a member of the Pre-Veterinary Club, the Veterinary Technician Club, volunteers at elementary schools in her hometown, does local dog washes and dog shows, and helps work the Remote Area Medical Clinic.

In 2008, Baker received the Lady Splitter Award.  While a member of the Lady Railsplitter volleyball team, she played in 66 matches for a total of 197 games and was a senior leader for the 2007-08 team which finished 20-15 last fall.  She ranked in the top-4 on the team in kills this year (234), digs (311) and service aces (27).  On October 26, 2007, she had a career high 16 kills and a .444 hitting percentage verses Catawba College.  On October 27, 2007, Baker tallied a career high 25 digs against Newberry College.

In addition to receiving the B. Frank Turner Award, Baker is the recipient of the W.L. Spencer Endowed Scholarship and is a Lincoln Ambassador for the 2008-09 academic year.

Amanda will complete her degree requirements in May and will receive an Associate of Science in Veterinary Animal Science at the University’s commencement ceremonies before returning next fall to pursue her bachelor degree in Veterinary Technology.
